If you enjoy books where the author spends a LOT of time describing the background/settings etc, then this book is for you. It was a little too much for me, and it bogged me down a bit.
And the name of one of the family pets in the story is, in my opinion, a swear word, "The Bastard" which means I cannot donate this series to our church library.
The overall story was alright and I will read the other two books in the series since I bought them already, but I won't be in a hurry to buy this author's books again.

Ms Goudge writes a vivid English novel about love that clashes with duty. Her style is similar to Jane Austen, even the Brontes, with much detail but the novel is worth every minute invested. Also recommended is THE DEAN'S WATCH by Eliz Goudge.
