David C. Cook Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates the Claims of the Gospels

A riveting journey through Christianity using the analytical lenses of a former atheist and L.A. County homicide detective!

Christianity, with all of its claims coule easily be described as a "cold-case"; a case for which insufficient hard evidence exists to make any sound conclusions about its truth claims. However, in Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally acclaimed skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs.

He includes gripping stories from his career and the visual and interrogation techniques he developed in while a police officer. Along the way, he uses analogy and anecdotes to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity.

A unique apologetic that speaks to readers' intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Well written, with solid evidential arguments in defense of orthodox Biblical Christianity. Wallace brings such a fresh and unique perspective, with years of qualified investigative experience. Applied to the realm of biblical historicity and authenticity, Wallace's expertise as a cold case homicide detective pays off and provides the reader with a new set of tools that will assist them in becoming a "case-making Christian." This is a book that I will reference time and again as I address the common questions, and the not so common questions, that I hear from coworkers and friends on a regular basis. And thanks to Mr. Wallace's work (and the guiding to the Holy Spirit, of course), I've already had a great theological encounter with a coworker of mine who saw the book sitting in my bookbag!

This was my first book on the topic of apologetics. Wallace took an approach that kept me interested the entire read. I feel better equipped to defend the Gospels and speak the truth having read this book.

I've worked probation settings for over 10 years and have written over 1000 pre-sentence investigation reports that are used in sentencing hearings by DA's, judges etc. Part of a pre-sentence report includes a summary statement on the offense made up of police reports, detective reports, witness statements, social service statements, victim statements,& the perpetrator statement. What this book does, is truly explain the methodology used by professionals in making sense of these statements & reports and how we summarize the events in a cogent, consistent manner that stands up in court.
Funny, is that for years a co-worker and I would comment that the Gospels read better than the eye witness testimonies that we read daily. Guys, I spent three years reading and reviewing material trying to see if the Bible was accurately passed on. For me, the Bible is God-inspired and true and I only discovered layer upon layer of evidence. Even Bart Ehrman acknowledges that the present Bible is pretty much what the ancients wrote down.
As an experienced court official, the quality of the Gospels as eye-witness testimony is unmatched when compared to what law enforcement works with. As far as apologetics goes, I'm not sure how a skeptic or atheist would counter this book. But if I, a lifelong believer, can honestly explore the other side, to include becoming fluent in science, you should too. This book needs to be explored.

Although I am still reading this book, I have to share that this is a one of the best books around to address the veracity of the Gospel writers! The author, who was an atheist and is now a Christian, uses methods that he has applied to "cold" homicide cases to show how the writers of the Gospels are believable and true in their writings of what they heard and experienced during their time with Jesus, including his death and Resurrection. I look forward every night to read another chapter of his book. I think you will, too.

Have you ever served on a Jury? This book puts you on one. Cold Case Christianity is written by a Los Angeles homicide detective. His book examines the Case for the Authenticity of the Gospels and the Bible. He lays out the evidence, and teaches you how to evaluate it. Will You Convict or Acquit?
For the non believer there may never be "enough evidence", but that claim aside, can we verify the Historical Eyewitness Accounts that are the premise of our Christian Faith? Can we prove these things beyond a Reasonable doubt? Can we show the non believer that the evidence we have is sufficient?
Cold Case Christianity examines whether the evidence was handled with care. What was the "chain of custody?" Were the Gospels a fabrication? A conspiracy based on power, money or prestige?
Did all the Disciples corroborate the story?
J. Warner Wallace says No. So many people will not stick to a lie. All the Disciples, other than John, died a martyr's death but none of them recanted their story to save their lives.
Examine the dates, times, and people and what do you say? Men and Women of the Jury, Has J. Warner Wallace convinced you?

J. Warner Wallace worked as a police officer, a detective, and then a cold case detective. Relying on his experience, he examines first the evidence that God exists, and then he turns to the eyewitness accounts of the life of Jesus. He explains the reasoning behind the techniques that a detective utilizes to examine evidence, even examines what qualifies to utilize as evidence. The book is thoroughly researched and cited, as are documents used in a court of law. Use this book when you need solid information to answer someone who is questioning or give it to someone who could benefit from the over whelming evidence of the existence of God and His Son, Jesus Christ.

Wallace is a cold case homicide investigator. He was a skeptic. He thought the supernatural was impossible.
He decided to investigate the evidence for Christianity using his skills as a detective.
He introduces us to the tools and techniques he used to crack unsolved murders. He explains how he used the same analytical thinking on the claims of Jesus.
Wallace was thirty five when he began his journey, reading the gospelsfor the first time. He used his training in Forensic Statement Analysis and concluded them to be actual eyewitness accounts. As a cold case investigator, he had been trained in working with facts from the distant past.
As he gives us the principles detectives must learn, he illustrates each principle by using examples from his own cases to illustrate the techniques. He writes about presuppositions, abductive reasoning, circumstantial evidence, trusting eyewitnesses, separating artifacts from evidence, establishing chain of evidence, and more.
In the second part of the book he applies the investigative techniques to the claims of Christianity.
I was impressed with this book on several levels. I love to read mysteries and I was fascinated with the way Wallace wrote this book. He'd start a chapter with a case, perhaps how an eyewitness was essential. Then he would describe the importance of that aspect of the investigation. That is eventually applied to the claims of Christianity.
An insight that really impressed me was the idea of making a decision while there are still unanswered questions, still pieces of the puzzle missing. In many cases, there is enough evidence for a decision even though the evidence is not absolutely complete. Wallace applies that concept to Christianity. The evidence does not have to be complete, just reasonable, for one to make a reasonable conclusion.
His collection of circumstantial evidence for a created universe is impressive.
His insight into how eyewitnesses may tell different stories depending on their vantage point relates well to the differences in the gospels.
If you are skeptic of Jesus being who he said he claimed to be, you need to read this book. You can become a Christian because of the evidence, not in spite of it.
If you are a believer, this book will build your faith and help you explain your faith to others in a more informed way.
I have read many books on apologetics and this one is the most interesting I've seen. The combination of investigative techniques and evaluating the evidence is enlightening. Certainly skeptics should not ask perfect evidence when a jury makes a life and death decision on reasonable but not perfect evidence.
Great work Wallace. I highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.
