Customer Reviews for Baker Justification of God

Baker Justification of God

The Justification Of God is a compelling exposition of Romans 9:1-23. Piper incorporates exegetical study as discusses the texts presentation of God's sovereignty from a Calvinist standpoint. John Piper is senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. He did his doctoral work in theology at Munich.

Mr. Piper carefully and knowledgeably dissects a key chapter that will help others better understand it.

While preaching through Romans, I read this book. When it came time to preach on this difficult passage, I found Piper's exegesis to be extremely helpful. He will not satisfy all no-reformed scholars, but no one can dispute the care with which he handles the sacred text. If this is the first Piper book one reads, it could get heavy in a hurry; therefore, I recommend that the reader start with Desiring God or (as I did) Don't Waste Your Life. John Piper is truly a voice of proclamation for our times. My love for the Savior and my desire to glorify Him in all His holiness has increased exponentially as a result of Piper's ministry. When one is in the pastorate, he is forced to find food even as he feeds others. Piper has been this pastor's pastor...and I am the richer for it. Hopefully, so are my people.

This is a well-reasoned, thoughtful, well organized commentary on a very difficult passage of scripture, which is important to an understanding of Paul's perspective on the future of the Jews, as well as salvation, generally.

The Justification of God is a thought provoking read. However, the book is a bit technical for the average reader.

Dr. Piper provides us with an excellent exegetical study of Romans 9:1-23. He writes in defense of Reformed Theology and the doctrine of election. This is a technical book and requires knowledge of the Greek text. However, even without knowing Greek one can easily grasp Piper's clear theology.

This is a fairly technical work by John Piper. It presupposes that the reader at least know some Greek. My understanding is that this was John Piper's doctoral dissertation. He makes an airtight case from Romans 9 for the Calvinistic doctrine of double predestination. His exegetical case is absolutely rigorous. Although it is not a fast read, Piper is still an utterly clear writer. This is a MUST read for serious interpreters and those who wish to defend the Calvinistic doctrine of predestination. Conversely, no serious Arminian should dismiss Calvinism until they have read this work.
