HarperOne The Screwtape Letters - Special Illustrated Edition

A classic work by C.S. Lewis now available in a special illustrated edition, The Screwtape Letters is a masterpiece of religious satire that entertains readers with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below." Having just bought the CD set (The Screwtape Letters) from Focus on the Family's Radio Theatre, I was actually anxious to read the book and cover some of the ground that LISTENING doesn't afford much time for. A masterwork on both page and audio. When I read the story now, I can HEAR Screwtape (brilliantly captured by actor Andy Serkis on the cd set). The illustrations are nothing shy of Inspired (okay, an odd thing to say about drawings of a DEMON, but remember, everything about this story is inverted, so my review might as well be, too. Ha,ha!) And I adore that Screwtape has to wear bi-focals! On a theological level, I find myself wanting to do the very opposite of everything this older demon is teaching his apprentice, by way of temptation. This is a good thing. I am now more keenly aware of the temptations that I've given into in the past, and wish I had both this book and the cd to help point out those devices. Thanks to Clive Staples Lewis (or Jack, as he preferred to be called) we are truly no longer Ignorant of the devil's tricks. And I know exactly who to blame the next time I come close to falling into temptation; Andy Serkis! ;)
