Revell The Christmas Shoppe

The small town of Parrish Springs is not ready for Matilda Honeycutt. A strange older woman with scraggly gray hair and jewelry that jangles as she walks, Matilda is certainly not the most likely person to buy the old Barton Building on the town's quaint main street. When it becomes apparent that her new shop doesn't fit the expectations of Parrish Springs residents, a brouhaha erupts. After all, Christmas is approaching, and the last thing the town needs is a junky shop run by someone who looks and acts like a gypsy. But as townsfolk venture into the strange store, they discover that old memories can bring new life and healing.

First thing to know- Melody Carson- an author known for surprises and make-you-think stories, that are so interesting, you do not see what a lesson you may be learning, and at the end of the book, you say WOW!, and wish it had not ended! That is The Christmas Shoppe!
I bought this because she wrote it, that is the only reason, and I knew it would not disappoint and it DID NOT!
I will not give the story away, so just buy it and enjoy! I think it makes a great group-read and discuss, also!

This story has an element of the unexpected, and I loved it.
It reminds me that you are not ready for Christmas until you have made things right with God and your neighbor.
There is a romance involved, but it is not the main theme, and makes it all the more more intriguing. Thank you Mr. Walsh.

Cute story, it's a quick read. More 'Christmas spirit' or 'spiritual'. No real mention of Jesus if that's what you're looking for in a Christmas time novel.

I love Melody Carlson, and she did not disappoint me this time. The story is quite unique, and touching, and simply wonderful. The main character, Matilda Honeycutt, is a most unusual "otherworldly" woman, and her shop, like she, is a one-of-a-kind. Encounters with her and her merchandise leave people better than they were before they meet up with her. This is the kind of a book that gives you the warm fuzzies, and leaves you with a smile on your face when you close it. It is at a fabulous price now, so get one for yourself and a few extra for friends.
I recommend this for adult or teen readers.

This book creates a drama and finishes with a feel-good, happy ending. The mystery of the shop is slowly revealed along with each character's pain that developed their personalities.

This was my first introduction to Melody Carlson. I must say that I really enjoy her style of writing, if her books are all written like this one. When I first started this book, I thought this would be a cute little store that sold Christmas items and that had a happy feel inside of it. I was surprised when it wasn't what I thought it was! (The picture on the front of the book also helped me form my opinion about a cute little shop!)
The Christmas Shoppe is a store that looks like a place no one would want to visit. However, when people went in there, they came out with something far more important than they could ever imagine. Matlida has a way about her that seems to teach those who enter into her shop what the meaning of Christmas really is.
This book is a short little book, but it's a great Christmas read. I would definitely recommend this book as a stocking stuffer or a book for that friend of yours who loves to read!

The Christmas Shoppe.....by Melody Carlson
An old historic building is up for sale along the towns shopping stores and the new stranger in town purchases it. The town people are suspicious of Matilda Honeycutt because she is opening a new store but the only thing they see that she has is old junk that no one would want. This causes quite a stir among the townspeople and they get together to see what they can do about running her out of town before she ruins all of their Christmas business.
Matilda is a happy person, full of life and a seemingly love for the people of Parrish Springs. While the people are meeting and plotting to run her out of town she is having a good old time fixing up her new purchased building for her Christmas Shoppe. She has something for everyone in the little town of Parrish Springs in her Christmas Shoppe but they just don't know it yet.
When the Shoppe opens and the people start coming in to check it out, Matilda encourages them to find the one thing in the Shoppe that is there just for them. At first they think she is crazy, but then it happens. And they leave the Shoppe a completely different person. You've just gotta read this fantastic book to see what each person finds that changes their life.
First of all, I am a huge Melody Carlson fan. I love her books and this one is just as awesome as her others. This story is different than any I have read and I was just fascinated reading it. What a wonderful story to help us remember the love of Christmas. God sent us His Son because He loved us so much. And even though this book wasn't preachy nor did it quote scripture, it shows the love Christmas should be in all of our hearts. This book is well worth reading, so grab a copy, read it and pass it around during the Holidays for others to enjoy!

The bookworms on your gift list will enjoy this refreshing, heartwarming story with a sprinkle of romance. It is a light, easy read. Definitely a book to read to "get away from it all" if a vacation is not on the horizon.
If you believe in Christmas angels then this book is for you! Matilda is a character in The Christmas Shoppe. She is an eccentric woman with some very unselfish goals as she sowed seeds of love, healing and happiness out over the people living in the town of Parrish.
I loved the story's message, which from my perspective seems three-fold:
1. Remember the true meaning of Christmas.
2. Don't allow old wounds to ruin your present and future life.
3. Allow love to conquer all.
The Christmas Shoppe receives two thumbs up for me! I am even letting my daughters read this one! :-) Oh and I did not shed one tear.....usually the tears flow in stories like this!

The city had put the old Barton Building up for a sealed envelope auction. Matilda Honeycutt's bid had won the run down building. No one in Parrish Springs was happy about it.
Matilda began to clean up the old building. She had a sign put out front: Christmas Shoppe.
Newcomer to the city, Susanna was trying to make her way as city manager. Now she was right in the midst of the turmoil caused by the new business.
Tommy was the third generation to own the local paper. But he is getting disgruntled and is contemplating selling out.
When someone sees the boxes of shoddy merchandise Matilda has yet to place on the shelves, the feelings against are even stronger. No one wants a thrift shop right on main street.
There is something different about the items Matilda offers for sale, however. Every time a customer comes in and looks around, a particular item grabs them – and brings them healing.
Tommy didn't understand what was going on in the town. People who had been against her shop were now singing her praises. Maybe it was something in the water, or in the air. Maybe the entire town was possessed by some weird force. Then Tommy visited the shop himself.
Nobody knew exactly when Matilda left Parish Springs. They just knew the town was never the same.
What a sweet Christmas story! Hurts healed. People changed. The best gifts of Christmas. Carlson has created a wonderful story.

I’m so glad that Melody Carlson writes Christmas books. This one is especially good.
An eccentric old woman snaps up a prime piece of property in downtown Parrish Springs, but no one really knows why or what is hidden in that building.
Finally she opens a most unusual shop and turns the inhabitants of the town upside down and sideways.
People want Matilda and her shop gone, but Matilda has an agenda.
Be sure to have some of those tissues handy.

An eccentric old lady with strange ways, a small town, a ruthless City Councilman and a new to town City Manager fleeing a past of brokenness and pain are thrown together in a story that effects every one in this sleepy little town.
Melody Carlson has woven together a heart-touching story of faith and redemption. This book is just the right length to read on a lazy fall day as you cuddle beneath a stack of blankets. The story is easy enough to read that from the first page the reader is drawn in and hooked.
The Christmas Shoppe at first glance is a store filled with worthless odds and ends. The owner is an odd old woman that has captured the thoughts and imagination of the towns people. Every one has their own opinions of her and her odd dress and mannerisms. However, no one that steps into the little shop comes out the same. One can not help but be changed when they encounter the power of forgiveness - the facing of the brokenness in each person. This shoppe's power is in the facing of one's past, the acknowledgment of brokenness - and the shedding of truth on lies.
In a matter of weeks this small sleepy village ruled by tradition and steeped in silent pain held by each person is changed by the power of truth unleashed with love and compassion.
This book is so sweet. If you are a Secret Santa this year put it in your basket for your person with a mug, some cocoa and marshmallows and a small fleece blanket. Everyone needs to face something in our past and be released from a bondage of some sort. Though the book is not intrusive personally it will be one that makes the reader wonder what worthless piece of "junk" still has a hold on their life and is holding them back from the very best that God has for them.
Thank you so much Revell for this review copy. I am already recommending it for others to purchase.

Just like the townspeople in The Christmas Shoppe, I thought the store was going to hold Christmas decorations and maybe even small gifts for children to give their parents. Silly me!! I was sure surprised when the truth came out!
Loving Melody Carson books, I was surprised at the animosity of some characters. It just didn’t seem her style to have such bitter individuals in the story. I soon learned the necessity of those folks to make the story work. Even the nicer characters began to turn on Matilda when she opened her shoppe and it contained “junk”.
I truly enjoyed seeing the characters soften and become believers after shopping at The Christmas Shoppe. Matilda is very intuitive when people come into her shoppe—she can bring out long forgotten memories and make people realize what’s important. The sayings and verses on her shoppe wall truly touched me and I am using them in my art and journaling. Thank you Ms. Carson for those.
The Christmas Shoppe gets 4 stars in my book. The character building and finally, togetherness, is the epitome of Christmas’ true meaning. It’s a true “feel good” book to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Just in time for the holiday season! The Christmas Shoppe by Melody Carlson is a heartwarming story that readers won't soon forget. Carlson has written a new Christmas novella for the last few years running and I was excited to receive this one. Carlson has a knack for translating the Christmas spirit directly into her books. She is able to conjure up feelings of nostalgia and Christmas memories from years long past and I think readers enjoy that kind of sentiment this time of year. It is a time of peace and joy, family and tradition and Carlson's writing exemplifies all of that and more.
In The Christmas Shoppe readers are quickly reminded of that age old lesson, "Never judge a book by it's cover!" There is a lot more to Matilda Honeycutt than meets the eye and the townspeople of Parish Springs were quick to judge her. She had scraggly hair and an unkempt demeanor. She didn't wear the right kind of clothes or talk about the most fashionable subjects. Her shop appeared to be nothing more than a junk store and people were not impressed. But once they began to filter into the Christmas Shoppe, they found exactly what they were seeking, even though they didn't understand that they had been looking for it.
Matilda is a character that reminded me of Debbie Macomber's, Mrs. Miracle. She mysteriously appears out of the blue and sets about making Christmas special for the town of Parish Springs. Carlson portrays her in manner that readers will wonder if she was really an angel in disguise or someone meant to teach them that the spirit of Christmas isn't found in fancy presents and exorbitant amounts of money. I liked the fact that Carlson gave her such a mysterious attitude, readers can almost imagine the twinkle in her eye.
One of the things that I find most interesting about Carlson's Christmas novella's is that they aren't romances. This time of year readers are inundated by piles of Christmas romance books and there are so many to choose from they hardly know what to read first. But when a book like this comes along, it's a given that is going to be good. It isn't driven by romance or sex. It's about family and hope and the Christmas story and what it means and I really felt that was something I needed to hear this Christmas. If she didn't write to touch anyone else, it certainly touched me!
I recommend this one to readers who need a touch of the Christmas spirit this year. With the economy in shambles and Christmas presents being harder and harder to come by, the treasures in Matilda Honeycutt's store, were all the more precious. A great Christmas read, with a heart felt message!
