Baker The Light and the Glory, 1492-1793

Did Columbus believe that God called him west to undiscovered lands? Does American democracy owe its inception to the handful of Pilgrims that settled at Plymouth? If, indeed, there was a specific, divine call upon this nation, is it still valid today?

The Light and the Glory answers these questions and many more for history buffs. As readers look at their nation's history from God's point of view, they will begin to have an idea of how much we owe to a very few--and how much is still at stake. Now revised and expanded for the first time in more than thirty years, The Light and the Glory is poised to show new readers just how special their country is.

I read this book several years ago. Have since misplaced it, and wanted to get it back in my library. It's a great history of America. I think that this book, as well as the others in this series should be "must reads"!

Excellent book on the influence of the Christian faith on early American colonization. Begins with Colombus' voyage in 1492 and ends with the death of George Washington. Very good focus on the people involved in founding this country, their personalities, their strengths, and their weaknesses, but especially on their faith and how it contributed to who they were and their importance to this country. The authors have done a magnifcent job of gathering original documents to support their work. Many quotes from those who are major players in the history of the early U.S. and many quotes from original documents to support the authors' analysis. This is the first of a trilogy. I have also read the second volume, "From Sea to Shining Sea" and have the third on my desk awaiting my attention. If you like dynamic and personal accounts of history you will not be disappointed. This series should be required reading for every student who takes American history. Although those concerned with the current "politicaly correct" trend in filtering history will not be amused. So much the better....

I bought this book for my husband, a true history buff, and we were so impressed with the quality of writing and the insightful and thoroughly knowledgeable writing of the true history, roots, of the United States and how majorly their faith in God placed in decisions that were made. Would recommend to everyone who wants to know what One Nation Under God....and freedom of religion really means.

It is a must read for every American of high school age and above but especially for those doubting or negating the Christian heritage of the United States. I will show/e-mail it to my church pastors and friends.
