Revell Remembering Christmas

Rick Denton lives his life on his terms. He works hard, plays hard, and answers to no one. So when his mother calls on Thanksgiving weekend begging him to come home after his stepfather has a stroke, Rick is more than a little reluctant. He's never liked Art and resents the man's presence in his life, despite the fact that his own father abandoned the family when Rick was just twelve. When what was supposed to be just a couple days helping out at the family bookstore turns into weeks of cashing out old ladies and running off the homeless man who keep hanging about, Rick's attitude sours even more.

Still, slowly but surely, the little bookstore and its quirky patrons--as well as the lovely young woman who works at his side each day--work their magic on him, revealing to Rick the truth about his family, his own life, and the true meaning of Christmas. With skillful storytelling, Dan Walsh creates a Christmas story will have readers remembering every good and perfect gift of Christmas.

I really enjoyed this book. I bought several copies for Christmas gifts next year. It has a strong message of faith without being too overbearing or "preachy" to those who are seeking or perhaps unsure of their faith. It is a lighthearted, faith inspiring feel-good read. I strongly recommend this book especially for gift-giving. It has a lovely cover and I like that it is hardcover.

This story was one that I found truly heartwarming. I bought it because I'd read other books by the same author and enjoyed them a lot. Normally stories that have a Christmas theme seem a bit sappy to me, but I decided to try it anyway. I thought it was cool that the story was set in 1980 since that was during my childhood. So many of the events mentioned in the novel I actually remembered. I loved how the author showed several perspectives, and how the hero's heart softened over time because of people that knew his family. His initial resentment toward the step-father and the eventual transformation of his feelings as a result of hearing so much about the real man and his relationship with his mother melted my heart in a good way. His attitude and lifestyle was literally changed by his surroundings. I also appreciated his perspective on the heroine. The only thing lacking in this love story was a good kiss, however, the love between his mom and step-father made up for that. It was tender and emotionally moving. I enjoyed getting to know these characters.

In the beginning of this book we meet a man whose life was changed by a bookstore.
I thought it was JD. Then I thought it might be Rick. Then I realized it might be Charlie. Do you see where I’m going? It might be any number of men.
You just need to keep reading. You have to if you want to know what happens to Art, Leanne, Andrea and Amy.
Also, you’re going to need that box of tissues for this one. I can’t realy say anything more, because I’m afraid I might give away too much of the story. What I can say is that Dan Walsh writes wonderful books.

Remembering Christmas by Dan Walsh is one of those books that is all about family and what it means to be a part of one. It is a book to be read over and over again as a reminder of being a devoted son or daughter.
Remembering Christmas is not your typical, predictable romance. It does contain a few well placed twists and turns. What I liked about it is that a wealthy, successful, yet selfish son, Rick, comes back to his hometown during his mother's time of need. He begrudgingly puts all his needs and wants on the back burner to be there for her. I admire his devotion to his mother.
I also liked that Rick's trip home forced him to face his old hurts and repair broken relationships that should never have been broken in the first place. It is through the healing process he finds unexpected love and devotion of another kind.
This is a lovely story about relationships. Everyone could learn something from this book. It gets a two thumbs up from me!

A real "feel good" book

I enjoy reading Christmas novels—maybe it’s because I’m a “bah humbug” person and I think reading about it will get me in the spirit. Or maybe because Christmas novels are usually “feel good” books that warm the heart. I’m not sure what it is but I was excited to receive Remembering Christmas to get that feeling.
There were several parts of Remembering Christmas that did give me the “feel good” feeling. I enjoyed that Rick came to the aid of his mom and stepfather without hesitation even though he wasn’t close to his stepfather. The down side to that was his attitude about it and thinking he would only be there for a few days. In my world, if my parents need me to help, I’m there in a heartbeat without the attitude. Some folks are different, of course, but I don’t really understand why.
After learning how much the community respects and praises his mom and stepfather, Rick starts to think about his childhood with a different perspective. He realizes maybe it was HIM and not his family that had a bad attitude growing up. It’s amazing how when you finally get to know about someone, your perspective and memories are altered. What I wasn’t so excited about was the fact that he didn’t know his mom and stepfather after all those years. Rick was selfish and self-centered and only interested in how he could climb the corporate ladder.
Because this is a Christian book, there are lots of faith references but nothing that is preachy. It was a good balance of antagonist and introspection. There was one aspect that did bother me a little. The title is Remembering Christmas but other than the weather, Walsh didn’t refer back to the spirit of Christmas. Yes, miracles happen at that time of year but they also happen throughout the year and the book didn’t really make me think of Christmas—spiritual or otherwise.
Remembering Christmas is a “feel good” book but it didn’t make a huge impression on me. I wasn’t compelled to sit and read it all at one—not a page turner to me. It’s a nice story but nothing special. For that reason, I give Remembering Christmas 3 stars. I am, however, interested in reading his other novels to see what they are like.
I received this book free from Revell as part of their book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

Remembering Christmas is one of those books that though, simple in it's telling, packs a powerful punch emotionally. Dan Walsh proves yet again that he is a master storyteller, with his latest release of forgiveness and family.
What I love about Mr. Walsh's books is how deep all of his characters are, and there is always more than what first meets the eye. Every character is complex and miles deep, each with their own struggle, and yet Mr. Walsh weaves all the ends in beautifully (yet not painlessly) in such a way that though you might not have seen it coming you couldn't imagine it any other way.
The story is well told, and the pages turn rapidly, though at times it's an inner battle between speeding through the book to find out what happens next, or slowing down and savoring every word.
This was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed from cover to cover, and that doesn't happen often. With Christmas fast approaching this is the perfect book to get you in the mood, or to give as a gift. You could even give it to yourself!
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to just about anyone, whether it's Christmastime or not, Remembering Christmas is a satisfying read, that will tug at your heartstrings :)

I have been hooked on Dan Walsh’s books ever since reading The Homecoming and was thrilled to be able to review Remembering Christmas. It’s an amazing story with an important message and has a totally unexpected twist that took me by surprise.
There are so many wonderful lessons to be learned from this book; selflessness, commitment, loyalty, forgiveness……..just to name a few!
Not only is this a romantic love story, it’s also the love story of family ties and just how important those relationships are.
Rick Denton thinks he has it all with his successful career and carefree lifestyle. He is hard hearted, cocky and self sufficient, needing no one to lean on. Rick is perfectly content climbing the corporate ladder, not caring if he has to crush someone else to do it. Yet he quickly comes to realize what he is missing when a family crisis forces him to go home to the people he would rather forget.
Memories begin to wash over Rick and suddenly life seems very different from the way he remembered it. If you are into books by Nicholas Sparks or Charles Martin, you will definitely want to get your hands on Dan Walsh’s books. I would not be surprised if this title was made into a movie. It’s a heartwarming Christmas story, perfect for gift giving or picking up for your own holiday reading.

Just when Rick Denton is in control and doing fine, a call from his mother will forever change his life. Dutifully he responds to her request to come home and help when his stepfather’s life is on the line. From big city living to a small beachside community Rick is taken back in time and the past and the future are seen through changing eyes.
Dan has created a wonderful holiday read full of unique characters, reluctant hearts, and the need for understanding and love. The spirit of Christmas flows from the pages and will surely warm the coldest heart.
A splendid seasonal read to lift your spirits!.

My first thought upon closing the pages of this book was why on Earth have I never read a book by Dan Walsh before? Walsh is clearly a gifted author, one who immediately drew me into his powerful story. The characters are beautifully developed, with a host of quirky people providing moments of hilarity in the midst of adversity the main characters are experiencing. Rick is completely believable in how he is portrayed, from his moments of humor, sarcasm, and yes, times of being overly judgmental, to his transformation towards being a better man, brought about through his journey back to belief in God. While sometimes I find contemporary dramas to be a bit slow, I found that this story simply flew by and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Walsh throws in some unexpected surprises near the end, and the result is an absolutely heartwarming conclusion that is sure to please readers.
I highly recommend this book, both for reading during the Christmas season and for reading year round. Get in the Christmas spirit and read this book. 5 out of 5 stars.

"Remembering Christmas" is destined to be a holiday classic, I'd love to see this story played out on the big screen! I guarantee it would become an annual favourite. Somebody call Hallmark!
Walsh writes with a measured clarity that evokes images. Vivid, heart-wrenching and definitely heart-warming, the author has penned a story that shows us the powerful difference one constant follower of Christ can make in many lives. Have a Kleenex box handy and be prepared for more than just a few goosebump moments. This is a timeless tale you'll want to immerse yourself in. I read it in one sitting because I simply couldn't stop.

I bought this to read on a trip to fill in the travel time. Of course, having read The Unfinished Gift and its sequel, I should have known better. I started this book the night before the trip - and read it through. What a story and what a way to write it. Wish I could express myself as well. But.. I can't.
So I laughed and cried and suffered and rejoiced and cheered through it. Do yourself a favor and get this book - and keep it for a re-read.
One comment: A reviewer made a comparison to Nicholas Sparks. I think that to be a disservice to Mr. Walsh. Why? D. W. does not dish out the 'steamy' stuff. Nor have I found the inappropriate pre-marital sex as in Mr. Sparks' first book.
I like 'Christian' books to be clean in language and content.

Dan Walsh has crafted a wonderful, well-paced story of a family in crisis. "Remembering Christmas" has something for everybody: drama, humor, a painful backstory, love, romance, and redemption.
Set in the 1960s, the author took care to embroider the story with accurate details that help set the stage for the reader. The main character, Rick Denton, starts out cynical and jaded, forced into service to help out his mother. Slowly, cautiously, Rick starts to open up. This is tricky for an author. Too fast and it's unrealistic. Too slow and you lose your reader. Dan Walsh handled this metamorphosis so well. Boom! Something is discovered that rocks Rick's world.
Here's another example of what a fine writer Dan Walsh is: there is one character, Art, who is essentially "out of commission" due to a health emergency--and yet, readers know Art very well. In fact, he might be the most influential character in the story.
Definitely a book on my list to buy for friends and family this Christmas.

Dan Walsh is back with a Christmas novella that shows he can write emotion as well as Nicholas Sparks. In Remembering Christmas, the reader steps back to the winter of 1980. Some of the author's illusions to the way life was back then had me smiling and dreaming -- especially the reference to gas that hovered around $1.00. A son, Rick Denton, returns home with extreme reluctance to help his mom when his stepfather has a medical emergency. He takes over their shop -- ironically, a Christian bookstore -- when he has no idea of the products.
He is in dire need of assistance and finds that in the pretty and kind-hearted Andrea. Over the course of the Christmas Season Rick has to make some decisions about who he is and who he wants to be. And when the author adds a twist that alters all of Rick's assumptions about his past, he has some soul-searching to do.
This book is an easy-read -- for the most part. There were times that the questions Rick confronted made me take a look at my life and how I would respond. So put on Bing Crosby's White Christmas, grab a mug of hot chocolate and dive into a novel that will put you in the Christmas spirit.

Often, in the Christmas rush, we look to the new things we will get, and fail to recognize gifts we already have. I love stories that stay with me because the characters’ lives meaningfully change. Walsh’s story of renewal is like that - a gift of entertainment with unpredictable events sure to keep you reading, yet more. Subtle surprises and poignant characters struggle to find restoration from Christmas past, a place to slow down and savor Christmas present and a hope for Christmas future. Rarely do I read Christmas books before the season, but I’m glad Revell sent an advanced reader copy so early because this is a classic that will be read again, this year and next.

Don’t be fooled by the slow development of Dan Walsh’s latest novel. The realistic individuals peopling this powerful book work their way into readers’ hearts, and they’ll soon be caught up in the unfolding drama. Remembering Christmas is a stirring story of love’s transforming power, a touching tale for any time of year. As the characters’ lives are changed, I believe the readers’ will be too.
Rick Denton, a successful accountant, seldom connects with his mom and stepdad back in his old hometown on Florida’s coast. When called to help out in their small Christian bookstore after his stepfather’s aneurysm Thanksgiving weekend, Rick feels out of his element. His run-in with the unkempt homeless man who hangs out near the Book Nook doesn’t help his attitude. But Rick’s growing attraction to Andrea, who works at the store, and her daughter, Amy, nibble at his efforts to remain uninvolved. He also struggles with the pain of his father’s desertion during his childhood.
Readers will be able to identify with these issues, which mirror modern life in our frenetic world. Remembering Christmas can help us slow down and savor the important things. Enjoy the story and its unexpected twist, but never forget its message.

This is a great read and not just for the holidays.
Though it's a serious look at family relations and growing up long after we become adults, there are many light moments in this book. It's a story of a young man who comes home to help his mother when his stepfather becomes ill, and the pages are full of details from a time not so long ago. A fast pace with well-drawn characters, I was charmed.
Walsh helps you to see your family, and even strangers, in a different light. Remembering Christmas is rich, satisfying, and full of hope.
