Revell Heart's Safe Passage, The Midwives Series #2

It's 1813 and all Phoebe Lee wants out of life is to practice midwifery in Loudon County, Virginia. When Belinda, her pregnant sister-in-law, presses Phoebe to accompany her onto a British privateer in order to cross the Atlantic and save her husband from an English prison, Phoebe tries to refuse, then finds herself kidnapped.

Captain Rafe Docherty is a man in search of revenge. His ship is no place for women, but he needs Belinda in order to obtain information about the man who destroyed his family and his life. Between Belinda's whining and Phoebe's hostility, Rafe can't help but wonder if he made the right choice.

When it becomes apparent there is an enemy among them on the ship, the stakes are raised. Will they reach the English shore in time? Can love and forgiveness overcome vengeance?

I loved Heart's safe Passage! Our heroine, Phoebe was spunky and feisty and the perfect match for our rogue hero Captain Rafe. Both of them harbored secrets from their past, I loved the way the author used God and faith to uncover those secrets and help these characters through the healing process.
This book also had the action/adventure that I found lacking in the first book.
I really feel that the author stepped it up in this book and she really found her footing. I'm looking forward to the third book in this series.

It seems like every time I’ve turned around over the past year, I’ve been hearing bits and pieces about this book. Before reading it, I knew several things: the hero was a bad boy on a dangerous mission, the heroine was a headstrong midwife, and they went to sea.
Well, the story proved to be much more than a bad boy meets a good girl and they live happily ever after. “Sweeping” is the best word I can think of to describe it. It starts off in Virginia, where the heroine heads to sea against her will and due to the scheming of a cruel sister-in-law. From Virginia, Phoebe’s whisked away to Bermuda, then England, and even France. Despite the wide scope of geography covered in the novel, Eakes does a masterful job creating mood and setting. I felt like I was personally visiting every country she described and living through the War of 1812. Eakes understanding of the American, British, and Scottish mindsets is nothing short of amazing.
Furthermore, the characters of Rafe and Phoebe are richly drawn. Neither is perfect, both make mistakes, and both struggle along the path to forgiveness and redemption. They have so much to overcome both physically and emotionally, that at times I wondered if they would ever make it. But they DID make it, and it’s a wonderful story readers won’t soon forget.

The heroine frustrated me and many times I wanted to shake her but it all comes right in the end. I like a story where the hero, heroine live happily ever after and this story left me with the desire to read more of this author.

A high seas adventure full of tension & romance!
Phoebe Lee has escaped her past, but now she must confront her fears for the future. Kidnapped by her pregnant sister-in-law, and the captain of an English ship, Phoebe struggles to accustom herself to her situation. Filled with romantic tension--yep that's where the Sea Captain, Rafe Docherty come back in--and adventure, Heart's Safe Passage is a tale of love and intrigue, with many mysteries to discover.
This book is loaded with romantic tension, and intrigue. Lots of surprises await you inside the covers of Heart's Safe Passage. One of my favorite things about Laurie Alice Eake's books is how you never know if the heroine can trust the hero, well he might be the hero, he might not. You never know!
I had a hard time getting into this book, but by the time I reached page 130 I was in. Great story, with wonderfully flawed characters. Sometimes though, I will admit, that I questioned the reason behind some of Phoebe's actions near the beginning, though I suppose most of that could be chalked up to the sea sickness.
One of my favorite characters was Mel, a charming young lady right on the brink of womanhood, she was so well done in that at times she could be so wise, and at others nothing short of delightful!
Overall, a good read, albeit slow to start. But if you've read Ms. Eake's books before and loved 'em, then you're sure love enjoy her latest, Heart's Safe Passage.

The second book in the Midwives Series, this book is a wonderful book full of action and romance. I was actually not expecting the plot to keep unfolding up until the very last page. Every time that I thought the plot couldn't thicken and that it needed to resolve at a certain point, it was intensified and became more complex. I had not read the first book in the series, but would like to check it out now. Saying that, I didn't have any problem following people or understanding the story. I'm not for sure if any characters were carried over from the first book to the second, but nothing is lost if you started reading this book first.
I was captivated by the story line. Phoebe Lee as kidnapped, kind of purposefully for one person and accidentally for another person. Phoebe has a history as a murderer and a midwife. Her story is very well-known in taverns so you can imagine what Captain Rafe Docherty thinks when the men bring her aboard with Belinda. Captain Rafe only wanted Belinda on board so he can help to carry out his revenge on Brock, a man who murdered Rafe's wife and parents.
Along the way are many twists and turns and like I said, a thick plot. Be ready to turn page after page because you just can't wait to see what the next chapter holds.

Heart's Safe Passage by Laurie Alice Eakes is an incredibly adventurous story! I was just hanging on to figure out how everything was going to work out in the end. Rafe and Phoebe were the perfect hero and heroine in this story. At first glance, they are total opposites and provided a lot of balance for one another. However, as the story progressed, they realized that they had more in common than they could have imagined.
I was also impressed by how well-researched the book was. The historical touches and the dialect used by Rafe and others gives it a more realistic touch and made me feel as though I were really sailing the Atlantic with a Scottish captain.
I can't believe I haven't read anything by Laurie Alice Eakes before! I'll definitely go back and read some of her previous books while waiting on the next installment of The Midwives series! [4 stars]

Phoebe Lee hasn't always had a good life, but lately things are better. She finds purpose and contentment as a midwife. However, when she refuses to accompany her pregnant sister-in-law to England, Phoebe is kidnapped by Captain Rafe Docherty's crew. As they set sail on the Atlantic, Phoebe struggles to escape, but eventually finds herself drawn to Rafe inspite of his illegal actions, painful past and thirst for revenge. As danger escalates, Phoebe and Rafe must first find peace with themselves and God before they can open their hearts to love.
Heart's Safe Passage by Laurie Alice Eakes is the second installment of the Midwives series. Having read the first book, Lady in the Mist, I can say that Heart's Safe Passage works fine as a stand-alone novel, but the experience with the characters is deeper if you have read the first.
Overall, I really enjoyed Heart's Safe Passage and I'm looking forward to Laurie Alice Eakes' next book. I thought the author did an excellent job of dealing with Phoebe's dilemma of following her heart or following logic. By allowing Phoebe and Rafe to have painful pasts, the author added depth that enhanced the story. I appreciated this aspect as I feel that sometimes in Christian fiction authors use only ideal characters that are surrounded by perfect families and societies. I recommend to anyone who is looking for a historical Christian romance.

"Heart's Safe Passage" is book two in author Laurie Alice Eakes The Midwives series. Although this book is enjoyable as a stand alone novel, I found myself to be thankful that I had read book one. Having read book one I knew more about a couple of the characters mentioned in passing as well as further understanding of the treatment of midwives in the society and time-frame of the book. This was a beautiful story, full of characters with complex backgrounds that were fun to read and unravel.
I had not before thought about what life aboard a privateer would be like for a woman, much less a pregnant woman and her midwife, but the author made the experience come to life and felt very believable. The tensions between the characters kept me reading eagerly until the very end.

Here's what I loved about this book:
•The setting. Almost all of it takes place on a ship (a brig, Captain Docherty would correct me). But far from being boring, I found it fascinating to learn about life at sea.
•The characters. Once again, these are no cardboard cut-outs. There are qualities to admire in them, but there are also flaws. The people you want to cheer for might disappoint you at times, and the ones you want to dislike might surprise you with shining moments.
•The word painting. Laurie Alice Eakes is the best comtemporary author I've read for using the sense of smell in her descriptions. This is difficult to do, and not every author bothers with it, but if you can conjure up the smell of the scene, you're drawn in even deeper into the fictional world. It's a powerful sense. Reading Heart's Safe Passage, it isn't hard to imagine yourself really there.
•The plotting. There are dramatic moments in the character's hearts, and moments full of physical danger. Plenty of life-and-death scenes are sprinkled throughout the book, whether it's a physical, emotional, or spiritual crisis.
I highly recommend this book, with no reservation.

How rude! All Phoebe Lee wanted was to practice midwifery in peace, but her sister-in-law had different plans. Belinda had her kidnapped and taken aboard a privateer’s ship. British, no less. That could get a person arrested for treason during the War of 1812, but the captain had promised Belinda that he would help free her husband from a British prison.
But there’s a lot of secrets onboard that ship. Belinda lied about her pregnancy. There’s a young boy who isn’t plus major secrets from both Phoebe’s and the captain’s past as well as that of others.
Captain Rafe and Phoebe start falling in love, but both fight it. Their past lives present seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The secrets keep coming out right up through the end.

A British privateer, headed across the Atlantic, left London County Virginia far behind. Captain Rafe Docherty, revenge foremost in his mind, is laden with emotional turmoil. Kidnapped, tied, and steaming mad, Phoebe Lee is determined to free herself at all costs. Just ask the men who brought her aboard. Held against her will but resolute to stay with her patient, her pregnant sister in law, her dilemma is complicated.
Well written with lots of action. Fiery exchanges between Rafe and Phoebe ignite their tempers and challenge their self control. Dark enemies, lurking within, make this a high seas adventure you won’t want to miss!

I loved Lady in the Mist (the first book in the Midwives Series) so much that I knew I couldn't miss the sequel. Eakes did not disappoint with Heart's Safe Passage. This beautifully written book satisfies on so many levels. Exquisitely drawn characters populate a privateer ship--er, brig--during the War of 1812, one bent on using an expecting mother as bait for revenge, the other a midwife sworn to protect her patient. Phoebe Lee, Tabitha's apprentice from book one, returns as the heroine in her own story. Captain Rafe Dockerty kidnaps her aboard his brig and whisks her into a journey of intrigue, romance and confrontations with the painful past. Both must learn to forgive themselves and those who have caused them deep trauma. Hero and heroine help navigate for one another as they adjust their spiritual courses to fully trusting God once more.
I love a book that can deliver thought-provoking ideas, rich prose, and a compelling story about people I become invested in, and this book has it all. In addition, its historical setting and detail provided a wonderful escape. Five enthusiastic stars for Heart's Safe Passage.

Regencys are back on my reading list thanks to Laurie Alice Eakes.
Heart’s Safe Passed is fast paced with characters you love. I mean like teenage-fall-in-love with the hero of the story. His name is Rafe. He’s everything a girl dreams of except he has a few flaws, like a strong desire for revenge.
Eakes kept me turning pages as I had to know if Phoebe would find a way to escape his him and his ship.

Wow! I just finished this book and LOVED IT! Laurie Alice Eakes is one of my favorite authors. In this book she delves into some tough issues instead of skirting around them. She had me dying to finish it and trying to sneak time away to read. The emotion in this book is amazing. The hero and heroine are so real you feel like you are right there with them, feeling their joy and their pain. The story kept me on the edge of my seat! I never knew what was next and I am good at guessing story lines. But it was so nice to read a story that was new and fresh. The story was fast moving, the characters well developed, the setting very real. I think this is my favorite yet. I really hated to see it end. I felt like I was having to close the book on friends. One of the best books I've read. It is a MUST READ!

In Heart's Safe Passage, L. A. Eakes has weaved an exciting tale of intrigue, betrayal, vengeance, and romance on the high seas!
It is the year 1813, and our lovely heroine, Phoebe Lee wishes only to practice midwifery in Virginia, amidst the turmoil of the War of 1812. Her pregnant sister in law, Belinda, arranges for Phoebe to be kidnapped and thrust aboard a British privateer, in order to accompany her to rescue her husband from an English prison. The captain of the ship, Rafe Docherty, has agreed to do this for Belinda, in exchange for information from her husband, that he might exact revenge on the man who has destroyed his family.
Rafe has had but one thing on his mind in nine years, to find and kill the man who has perpetrated such horrific crimes on his wife, and parents. Although, not British nor American, he and his twelve year old child have sailed the wild seas in search of the elusive James Brock, the man responsible. Although fiercely attracted to the lovely Phoebe, Rafe will let nothing stand in the way of his quest for vengeance, but will he lose his own soul in the process? What horrendous secrets is he hiding, and can Phoebe break through the tremendous wall of bitterness he has built around himself? And what of Phoebe? What gut-wrenching secrets is she concealing, causing a canker of bitterness to grow deep within her as well, although she is a Christian? Can the two find peace with God and love again, or will their bitterness destroy them?
Laurie Alice Eakes is a brilliant author...face it, anyone that can make a story exciting with a ship as the setting throughout...has to be! Her characters are very realistic and endearing, her research and knowledge of ships is astounding, her storyline exceptional. With a strong spiritual thread of forgiveness and redemption throughout, and a satisfying conclusion, this is a must read! My reason for giving this book a 4.5 rating instead of a five is very small...I don't care for shipboard settings, but it didn't ruin the book for me. Nicely done, Ms. Eakes!
I was sent an ARC of this novel from Revell Publishing Co. and was not required to write a positive review.

I had the priviledge of reading an advanced copy of this book for an endorsement. Laurie continues to be one of my favorite authors but I think this is her best work yet! Of course it didn't hurt that the story takes place on a ship crossing the Atlantic. But it is so much more than an adventurous tale. It is deep and passionate and romantic. The hero and heroine will take hold of your heart and never let go. If you're looking for a fluffy romance, look elsewhere. If you're looking for something that deals with the hard issues of life, with the ugliness and pain of abuse and betray..if you're looking for something that will stir your soul and leave you beathless with the romance, then look no further
