Revell Choosing to SEE: A Journey of Struggle and Hope

Grief is a journey many of us take at one time or another. For the Chapman family their journey began with the accidental death of their 5 year old daughter, Maria Sue, whom they adopted from China. In Choosing to SEE, Mary Beth Chapman shares her struggles with the tragic loss of Maria Sue, her journey to heal, and the unexpected path God has placed her on. Even as difficult as life can be, Mary Beth and the Chapmans choose to see with faith and hope. Foreword by Steven Curtis Chapman.

Mary Beth gives glory to God and preaches a great sermon, when she is talking about God. I thank her for that. However, she does write as if she is the only one in the world that has felt pain. She belittles people for trying to comfort her by saying they lost a parent or a pet in a similar manner as how they lost Maria. I feel so bad for those people if they read her book. Losing a pet or a parent can be extremely hard and I was offended how she acted like no one has known the pain she has gone through.
Another aspect I didn’t like about this book was how sex obsessed Mary Beth is. During her daughter’s funeral she gives a eulogy in which she talks about how Maria walked in on her and Steven having sex (she sounded like she thought this was funny that a 4 year old saw something she shouldn’t have) and how besides Steven another person who loved her “boobs” was her daughter. Pairing the two made it sound like the little girl liked her mother’s chest in a sexual way. At another point Mary Beth, Steven and a friend of theirs all get into the same bed and Mary Beth makes a crack about how this friend can finely say she slept with Steven Curtis Chapman. I believe this happened the day of her daughter’s death. She sure must have been upset to be thinking like that. She also tells us stories of how when she decided it was time to have a baby she insisted Steven come home and have sex with her. She gets kind of detailed about it. At another point in time a fire breaks out on the outside of their house. She takes the time here to mention how funny it was that her thin night gown got soaked and plastered against her body while she was using the hose to put out the fire. These are visual images I would prefer not to think about especially from a family I had so admired in the past.
Mary Beth tells us several times that she never wanted to be famous or write a book. But her book tells us she is very eager to have everyone know intimate details of her married life.
Other offensive content was how she supports the pill (which can cause abortions), she is a big supporter of Disney (Disney is affiliated with the company that made the movie The Temptation of Christ which mocks our Lord and they support anti-Christian organizations) and she acts very snobby about her whole situation.
I hope this doesn’t sound too harsh but I want other Christians to know that there is very offensive content in this book. I don’t think a true Christian would feel right about letting such stories into their mind.

What a great story of faith and perseverance. It also shows that everyone goes through something, the important thing is how we go through it. Thank God for His grace in time of need.

The first word in the title says it all; the Chapmans CHOSE to see God's plan and goodness in the midst of their tragedy, and continue to CHOOSE to see it as they follow through. Real people, gifted by and committed to God who is their resource and sustainer relating with poignancy the story of the loss of their child and the struggles that follow. Well written and honest; an encouragement to any Believer.

I so appreciate the vunerability and honesty that MaryBeth has laid out before the world to read about a very personal tragedy. Their faith in God and the love they share is the anchor which has sustained them. Thank you MaryBeth for being you!

Very well written. Loved Mary Beths honesty about her faith. So great to know others are continuing to trust our Lord and walk through very difficult times! I lost my nephew to drowning June 9th that same year and sent many prayers to our savior for the Chapman family.

I have always loved the Chapman's but, now I have a new respect for Mary Beth. Her truth and honesty in this book are so real. She does not sugar coat it. It is a very emotional and heartbreaking journey. But God is at work in this family! Loved the book!

I purchased this book after listening to a radio interview on Moody Bible Radio with Steven Curtis Chapman. It is an easy read, but deeply moving. It is inspirational, and encouraging. I loved all the information on adoption opportunities. I found Mary Beth's courage to be honest a real testimony on so many levels. You do laugh, and then cry, and then struggle for closure and healing for all of her family.
The pain of losing a child can make you focus on what you have lost. It takes time and determination to move that focus to what you have. Grieving is hard work, and best done in the arms of the Savior with those you love. I love this book. Thank you, Mary Beth, for writing it!

This book was simply amazing. She doesn't try to paint a pretty little "spotlight" Christian story life. She shows you the good, bad and ugly. I can personally relate to someone that doesn't try to make you feel like their perfect. Its amazing to see God's grace in Mrs. Chapman's life. What I loved about the book was that it wasn't just about the tragic accidental death of her daughter. Its about her whole life and getting through each obstacle with God's help. One minute you'll be laughing the next minute crying.
