Throughout years of teaching Introduction to Literature courses, Elisabeth Howe began to understand that teaching students to see such issues as sound and rhythm, imagery and figurative language, voice, the way characters are portrayed, the importance of setting, and plot structure change the way in which they approach their study of literature. Close reading allows students to examine the language and structure of a text, as well as the ideas or feelings it expresses, and to investigate the intricate links between form and content. This kind of in-depth analysis compels students to read differently and examine the connection between the ideas expressed and the way in which they are expressed.

This textbook features exercises to test comprehension after each chapter; short texts with detailed questions designed to guide students into close readings; and two sections on writing. Excerpts from classic works and favorite short stories are used as models.
