While Love Stirs, book #2 in the Gregory Sisters series, has romance, humor, historical detail, loveable characters, great storyline, and even a little mystery. It only took the reading of this one book by Lorna Seilstad to make her one of my favorite authors. Those who have read the first book in this series, When Love Calls, will enjoy being reunited with familiar characters, but this book easily stands alone.

Lorna does a great job incorporating interesting facets, events, and locales of the 1910 era in Saint Paul, Minnesota - the arrival of the first gas range, the pioneering work of Fannie Farmer in bringing attention to the nutritional needs of hospital patients, the recognition of baking as a science, the difficulty for women who desired to succeed in the world of business. Although I was born about 40 years after this story takes place, I found many things reminiscent of my growing up years - such as the cooking demonstrations with gas stoves, crisply starched uniforms and caps worn by nurses, etc.

Lead characters Charlotte Gregory and Dr. Joel Brooks appealed to me from the very beginning. Charlotte expresses herself through cooking and dreams of owning her own restaurant. Having graduated from Fannie Farmer's School of Cookery, she was eager to use her knowledge and passion to improve both the nutritional content and appearance of food served in hospitals. I loved the tip that cold foods are often the best way to entice a sick person with little appetite - foods like ice cream, cold puddings and custards.

Both Charlotte and Joel have past experiences that affect their present life and relationships. Charlotte avoids relationships with a man who is controlling, and control is exactly what Joel likes. He has always tried to prove himself and he desires that everything around him be in order. Sparks fly as their attraction is felt from their initial encounter, and I enjoyed watching their relationship grow in mutual trust and respect. The prose flows, secondary characters add richness, and Lorna certainly knows how to write captivating romance.

The youngest Gregory sister, Tessa - aspiring actress, Shakespeare quoting, a different dream every other week - is enchanting and I loved how her storyline is woven throughout this story in a way that sets up her story for a future novel. It was so ingenious the way she used her acting skills to emulate the prim Miss Walker.

In fact, humor is never far below the surface, and it is so enjoyable to read a story that makes me smile. In addition to humor, I believe Lorna is a little mischievous because she obviously had fun with the mysterious person with the initials "K.O." You'll have to read While Love Stirs to understand that comment, but I'm about ready to crown Lorna as the queen of red herrings!

One spiritual theme that stood out to me, maybe because it's something I seemingly have to constantly relearn, is that of trusting and giving control over to God. When the merchants of Red Wing refused to sell to Charlotte, her traveling companion Molly offers this wise advice: "How little we have doesn't matter. He can take what little we have and use it in a big way, but we have to bring him our empty vessels so he can fill them."

It was a pleasure to discover Lorna's writing and I will definitely be reading her other novels. I highly recommend While Love Stirs to all readers.

Thank you to Revell for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I really don't know very much about the culture and what society was like during this time period. I am just trusting that the author did her research and has written it accurately. That being said I want to say that I loved reading the details that she worked into the story. I loved the look at the amusement park and the yacht club regatta that she included. The details about the type of outings couples would go on when courting were wonderful.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know more about the Gregory sisters. I especially liked getting the update on Hannah and Lincoln, who were the main characters from the first book in this series. The deeper look at Charlotte only made me connect more with this wonderful character. She is so well developed and I was fascinated to see how events in her life from book 1 affected her personal story in this book. Lorna did a marvelous job of portraying that effect on the character's personality.

Lewis and Joel are both interesting characters and well developed. Their personalities are very different from each other. They also relate to Charlotte very differently. I loved reading the interaction between each of these pairs. Both of these men also have past events that have helped to shape who they are now which are very clearly presented. They are very different and both are just as enjoyable to read and just as easy to understand their affect on them.

Tessa is the youngest of the Gregory sisters. I found her progress in growing up and defining her individuality very entertaining. I am looking forward to reading her story in the third book in this series.

Lorna brought true chemistry in this book, I'm surprised the pages didn't burn!!! Adorable and a complete antidote for boring this story isn't just a triangle of love... this is a transition of letting go of the old and redefining the new- in the history ( the transition to gas stoves) and in relationship. Charlotte and Joel have both been hurt in the past and have made some serious promises to themselves....its going to take a miracle and a strong chemistry to readjust their thinking and poor smitten Lewis and a very jealous nurse aren't helping matters one bit..

absolutely loved this story!!!! Cant wait for the third one....if this very calm (from the first book's introduction) lady was such a character, can you imagine what their little sister is going to be??? absolute disaster!!!! i already feel sorry for the guy from that book...

    total recommend!!!

This is the second book in the Gregory Sisters historical series. The main character is Charlotte, the middle sister whom we met in the first book, When Love Calls.

Sparks fly when Charlotte Gregory meets Doctor Joel Brooks and they disagree over nutritious diets for pregnant and nursing women. Joel never learned much about it at medical school, and Charlotte just graduated from Fannie Farmer's School of Cookery, so knows a lot about cooking nutritious meals.

In fact, she finds a job doing cooking demonstrations for the gas company to promote gas stoves. Anytime they are together, Charlotte and Joel clash, but an attraction is also growing. Can their mutual attraction outweigh their strong personalities? Read the book to find out!

Although this is the second book in the series, you can read this one without reading the first, but I would suggest reading about Charlotte's older sister in When Love Calls, then reading this one, because I love to read series books in order!

This book was a gift from the publisher, but this review is my own opinion.

While Love Stirs by Lorna Seilstad is the second book in the The Gregory Sisters series. I really enjoyed the first story, but the second book is even better! Definitely one of the best books I've read this year. It was filled with humor, love, and nuggets of truth to help with our walk with God.

Charlotte Gregory has just graduated from Fannie Farmer's School of Cookery and is ready to share her new skills with the world, but because she is a woman no one will hire her at a restaurant. When she wins a cooking contest, she is offered a job from the gas company. She'll get to travel around and give demonstrations of the benefits of using a gas stove!

Dr. Joel Brooks is the youngest assistant director of the hospital who also has a penchant for order when in pops unorderly Charlotte wanting to change how hospital food is made and served to the patients. Her ideas have merit, but there are no funds to fix things anyway and even if there were, he needs all the money he can get for more important things. Charlotte finds Joel irritating to the extreme. Even without the necessary funds, she is sure he could at least let her teach the nurses about food preparation and presentation. Determined to win him over to her way of thinking might just cause more sparks than she bargained for.

This was a funny, lighthearted story with some deeper moments here and there. One of the best parts of the book is all the facts about cooking. I found it absolutely fascinating and, if you love to bake or cook, you will probably love this novel, too. I can't wait to read the next book about the youngest sister!

I was given this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
