Revell Tomorrow's Garden, Texas Dreams Series #3

Harriet Kirk is certain that becoming Ladreville's schoolteacher is just what she needs--a chance to put the past behind her and give her younger siblings a brighter tomorrow. What she didn't count on was the presence of handsome former Texas Ranger Lawrence Wood--or the way he slowly but surely claims her fragile heart. But can Harriet and Lawrence ever truly put the past behind them in order to find happiness?

Tomorrow's Garden is Book #3 in the popular series, Texas Dreams, written by the talented and gifted author, Amanda Cabot. I would like to preface my remarks by stating that I read this book without having first read the first two books in the series. I had no difficulty at all in following the story line and feel that this book can stand alone and be thoroughly enjoyed without the benefit of reading the first books. However, having read book 3, I am completely in love with the series and fully intend to read the other books also.
There are two major components that I look for when reading a book. One component, of course, is that it must be enjoyable and entertaining. Tomorrow's Garden fulfills this need on many levels. The characters are well-developed and possess personalities that are believable, complete with very real flaws and redeeming attributes. The storyline is captivating and moves along at a pace that quickly grabs the reader and catches them up in the action in such a way that they feel as if they are a partner in the unfolding drama. A good story transports the
reader to another reality, a time and place that exist only in the reader's mind and the words on the page. Based on these criteria, Tomorrow' Garden successfully accomplishes the objectives.
The second feature that I look for is "does the book help me to be a better person?" Most of the time I read Christian fiction because in it I find elements that minister to me and make me examine my life and attempt to become a better person/Christian as a result. This does not in any way mean that the book must preach or sermonize. The intent can be achieved quite readily without going to these lengths. Indeed, much of Jesus Christ's ministry consisted of telling stories in the form of parables in order to deliver His message. So too, can a book of Christian fiction minister in this manner.
Specifically, Tomorrow's Garden delivers a message of patience, of waiting upon the Lord for the answers which will be revealed in His time. Amanda Cabot has skillfully shown, through the simple act of having her students plant a garden, the lesson of patience found in James 5:7 (KJV) which states "the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it..." It also speaks a message of hope and reinforces the fact that through Christ we have hope of deliverance, both in this temporal life and also eternity.
Harriet and Lawrence both lived with a dreadful fear, a fear that, based on past events in their lives, was completely justified. Harriet's every action was governed by an emotional fear that was planted in her by her hypocritical parents and also by a physical fear based on the circumstances surrounding their death. To the observer, the actions and reactions of Harriet and Lawrence are seemingly irrational but, when the full picture is revealed, it is readily apparent why each of them responded in the manner that they did to events that transpired.
This book fulfills my personal requirements to be qualified as an extremely good book. This is one that I will read more than once. I highly recommend this book to you and hope that you will waste no time in getting your own copy of Tomorrow's Garden. You won't be sorry you did!

Harriet Kirk, a young teacher, strives to care for her five orphaned siblings. She faces numerous challenges—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual—as she tries to establish a new life for her family in Ladreville, Texas, in 1857. She wants to escape a painful past and longs for a new start in this troubled town. Add in life-threatening excitement and inexcusable crimes and the tension accelerates.
Amanda Cabot’s realistic historical fiction brings to life the time period and the personal experiences of the characters, keeping the reader anticipating and longing for a positive outcome. Harriet uses a garden to help teach her students patience and hope, a lesson readers also glean. Thus the title, Tomorrow's Garden.
Will Harriet be able to help her rebellious teen brother? Will she find true love and acceptance for herself? A sober German farmer courts her like he’s making a purchase to improve his life. The local sheriff/mayor evokes longings and anger in this strict teacher. Could they ever forge a life together? Added to personal conflicts are the town’s struggles between French and German settlers and between the old country and the new.
This novel is the third in the Texas Dreams series, but stands on its own as a powerful tale. Some of the characters continue from the first two novels, and I encourage readers to read them all.

Who can pass up a story with a handsome Texas Ranger, former or not?
Harriet is sober and responsible, yet with a touch of playfulness that Lawrence is able to bring out. It keeps her from seeming a bit too starched.
Lawrence is a man to admire. He's strong in his commitment to his job and to helping others. And, although Harriet raises his blood pressure at times, mostly a patient man.
I liked the way Amanda gave them each opposing fears based on past incidents in their lives. She has a way of finding something clever that resonates with me.
In Tomorrow's Garden, Amanda didn't shy away from a subject we, as Christians, tend to face from time to time---disunity within the church. She didn't make her Christian characters sweet and syrupy, but gave them a real concern and resolution.
Though I received the book from the publisher, my review reflects my own opinion.

I’d awaited Tomorrow’s Garden, the final book in Amanda Cabot’s Texas Dreams trilogy, eager for Texas Ranger Lawrence Wood to find peace and the right woman for him, and I was rewarded with a heartwarming story. Cabot’s a gifted writer who creates endearing characters. Harriet Kirk, the town’s new teacher, is a handful at first: strong-willed, determined, and saddled with responsibilities that have caused her to give up her dreams of marriage and a family of her own. Patient and perceptive Lawrence is able to see past Harriet’s sometimes-prickly exterior to the warmhearted woman within. Their journey is fraught with difficulties and danger, requiring them to face their fears and cling to their faith. The story is peopled with characters from the previous two books in the series, which is fun for the reader, but this book can stand on its own. If you enjoy a sweet inspirational historical romance, I recommend Tomorrow’s Garden.

It’s 1857 and Harriet Kirk’s hands are full teaching and caring for three siblings after her dysfunctional parents are killed in a fire.
The beautiful young woman wears drab clothing because men keep pursuing her. She gave up her dreams of a husband and family and knows it’s out of the question. Men don’t want ready-made families and she’s not going to divide up the children.
Thomas wants to marry her because he thinks she’s rich and he desperately needs money because gambling thugs want the money he owes. Harriet’s parents were rich, and if Harriet won’t marry him so he can get at the wealth, he decides to steal it
Jake, the oldest of Harriet’s siblings, constantly causes trouble—even as far as breaking the law to keep his sister from marrying.
So she quits her job and moves to get away from Thomas and Jake’s rebellious friends.
Her new teaching job is in Ladreville,Texas, where she soon tangles with Lawrence Wood, temporary sheriff, mayor and a former Texas Ranger because she doesn’t want to live in the wood house. Although he lives in a stone house, he lets her know she’ll have to live in the one provided. She’s not much impressed with the school being made from lumber, too.
He labels her a picky old maid with unrealistic expectations, but as part of his job he stops by the school to welcome her to the community. She gets to digging and discovers he hasn’t read anything much besides wanted posters since his school days. So she challenges him to read one of her favorite books. He returns it and they discuss it. He takes another, and soon they are meeting frequently to discuss books.
It doesn’t take long for an immigrant farmer to be affected by Harriet’s beauty and Karl Friedrich decides it’s God’s will for Harriet to be his wife. An added bonus will be the two boys to work his fields.
Jake , her brother, continues to give Harriet grief, slitting the seats of Karl’s new buggy.
Lawrence, as the sheriff, tries to help Jake, but the boy is bent on rebellion. Lawrence also is attracted to Harriet now, but when he jails Jake, her fury explodes on him.
The old suitor searching for money comes to town and complicates everything—bringing disaster with him.
This book will keep you reading. I commend Amanda Cabot for creating a story that will bring many hours of reading pleasure. I highly recommend it.

If you've read any of my book reviews over the last two years, you're probably aware that historical settings are not my favorite. And yet, every time I read a book written in a historical setting, I love it.
Such is the case with "Tomorrow's Garden" by Amanda Cabot. "Tomorrow's Garden" is the third book in a series titled "Texas Dreams." I was privileged to read the first two books "Paper Roses," and "Scattered Petals," and enjoyed them both! But "Tomorrow's Garden" will pull on your heartstrings. There is action and adversity, heartache and hope, loss and love. Throughout it all, God's message of redemptive love is evident.
Pour yourself a glass of lemonade, head for your favorite comfy chair and read "Tomorrow's Garden." You'll be glad you did.

In Tomorrow’s Garden, Harriet Kirk is the new schoolteacher in Ladreville, Texas. She takes the job as a means to escape past secrets, but doesn’t realize that Ladreville possesses a few secrets of its own.
As she struggles for acceptance in the community, she also has the daunting task of mothering her younger siblings, some of whom resent the move to a new community. When did teenagers ever feel happy about being uprooted? In her efforts to parent her siblings, and gain respect among the children in her classroom, Harriet comes across and strict and unbending.
Ladreville’s mayor/sheriff is former Texas Ranger Lawrence Wood, who was a minor character in the previous novel in this series, Scattered Petals. He’s made it clear to the community that his tenure there is only to last six months. His early encounters with Harriet leave him thinking that six months is too long.
Tomorrow’s Garden is a heartwarming story of a woman who needs to learn to love. Although this is the last book in the series, it isn’t necessary to have read the first two in order to enjoy every moment of this powerful novel. Amanda Cabot has skillfully woven in bits of backstory without stopping the forward motion of Tomorrow’s Garden. That’s not to say you shouldn’t read the first two books! I recommend the entire series.
My thanks to Revell for providing my review copy. My opinions are my own.

Amanda Cabot’s stories transport me to her well-developed settings and bring me into the hearts of her characters. In her latest book, Harriet Kirk is a dedicated school teacher who also has responsibility for raising her four siblings while she shields herself from anyone who wants to care for her. Self-sufficient, she suppresses her feelings of love for Sheriff Lawrence Wood and definitely does not think he could care for her. Lawrence withholds his feelings for Harriet, cautious not to scare her fragile heart. A compelling story that shows how feelings can become misplaced when people cannot leave their past behind and reach for happiness.

Amanda Cabot has quickly become one of my go-to authors. I can't even count the number of times I've recommended her books to my book friends....they're just that good! Her latest offering is the last book in the Texas Dreams Series, and I'm so sad that my time with the citizens of Ladreville has come to an end.
I enjoyed seeing the town through the eyes of Lawrence and Harriet. I have to confess that Lawrence wasn't one of my favorite characters in the last book. He was too stiff and rugged for my taste, and his infatuation with Priscilla got annoying after awhile. However, he was a completely different person in this book. He said goodbye to the life of a Texas Ranger, and stepped into the dual roles of town sheriff and mayor, two jobs that suited him quite well.
Meanwhile, Harriet stepped in to fill the vacancy for school teacher in Ladreville. Not only was she excited to be teaching in a new town, she was anxious to forge a new life for herself and her siblings. I couldn't help but smile at the friendship that developed between Harriet and Isabelle. Isabelle has been one of the most genuine characters throughout the series, and her sweet spirit in this book is not one that I'll soon forget. If it hadn't been for Isabelle, poor Harriet would have never softened her uptight exterior. She also would've been destined to be a victim of the Fashion Police for a LONG time if Isabelle hadn't come to her rescue!
Even more that the two previous books, I felt like I was a part of the town in Tomorrow's Garden. I wanted to scream at Harriet that she needed to keep her distance from Karl. I wanted to convince the townsfolk how important the bridge building was. And I wanted to cheer with joy at Ruth's gradual growth into a more confident young woman. Who wouldn't want to be part of such a community? :o)
If you enjoy such authors as Lori Copeland and Kim Vogel Sawyer, I would strongly suggest you give Amanda Cabot a try. Each book in this series has been filled with so much emotion, and all of them have been nearly impossible to put down! I don't know how in the world I will be able to wait until next year to read her next offering which will be set in Wyoming. :o)
4.5 Stars

Tomorrow's Garden is the final instalment in Amanda Cabot's Texas Dreams trilogy, set in the French/German town of Ladreville, a community steeped in European ways striving to make sense of their American home. Amanda infuses her story with a determined heroine and a compassionate hero, both dealing with past tragedies that impact their behaviour, recalcitrant siblings, inquisitive neighbours and danger in the form of a jilted suitor. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to warm to Harriet and felt the book foundered a little in the middle, which impacted my enjoyment of the story. That said, I appreciated how Harriet's defiant brother Jake is drawn, as he struggles authentically with his new found circumstances. While Tomorrow's Garden is not my favourite Cabot story, it may be yours so if you love a sweet romance be sure to look it up.

Harriet Kirk has many fears, fears that control her life. She fears house fires, she fears having her younger brothers and sisters being taken from her, she fears scandal, she is just afraid of so many things, including love. No one will ever want to marry her, she has too much baggage. She hopes a move from Fortune, the small town they grew up in, to a larger town Ladreville, will change things in her life. She will get away from the dreadful Thomas who wants to marry her, but doesn't love her. She will get her brother Jake away from the horrible influences that seem to be leading him astray.
However her plans seem to be falling apart in front of her, if anything Jake is worse than before, committing serious acts of vandalism, another man has his sites set on marrying her, and Thomas has shown up again demanding she marry him, and give him the fortune he believes she has. He will not stop until he has that money, even though there is no money, so now he decides she must pay!
A book filled with drama, excitement and redemption. New friends show Harriet that she does not always have to look like a mouse, with dreadful clothes, that she doesn't have to be strong all the time, and that she can find love. I enjoyed this book, it was filled with action and you could feel the emotion of the characters. 384 pages US $14.99 4 stars.

This is not the first book in the series, but the first that I read. I had no problems having not read the others.
Pretty, spunky heroine. Handsome hero. Younger siblings in need of guidance.
Harriet and Lawrence are afraid for the ones they love. Past experiences have made them cautious - overly so at times - in order to protect their loved ones and their hearts.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The romance was sweet. The characters were real. My heart both ached and rejoiced as I read. Tears filled my eyes more than once.
I would give this book closer to 4.5 stars if that were an option but I reserve 5 stars for exceptionally few books.

The journey of Harriet Kirk is one that pulls at a person's heart strings. Forced to take on adult responsibilities at a very young age and burdened with the responsibility to keep up appearences in the small town of fortune Harriet does not get the joy of just being a child. In this story the reader is invited to travel a road of survival and ultimate healing as Harriet takes her siblings to the town of Ladreville. This is the 3rd book in the Texas Dreams series but can easily be read as a stand alone. In this we see the continued stories of characters that we were introduced to in the earlier books as well as the new Kirk family. Harriet is strong-willed, determined and goal oriented when she moves to Ladreville. Her goals are centered on making a new start for her siblings so that they each have a chance to flourish outside of the shadow of gossip from their previous town or the burden of trying to keep up appearences of the Kirk family name. Never did she consider that this move would lead her into a new life of her own - a life where she is asked to face the past and let go in order to experience a love of her own. This story is wonderfully moving.

After reading the other two books in The Texas Dreams Series, I will have to say I enjoyed this one very much. The writing was excellent and the subject matter new and different. A school teacher caring for her five siblings was so different from single school teachers. Harriet Kirk was an interesting character and one Amanda created very well. I had not liked Lawrence Wood in the last book, but this one changed my opinion of him. He was portrayed as a very caring person. To me, the book addressed dealing with our fears. It was presented very well. Good job Amanda!

This western romance reminded me of the old John Wayne westerns - bigger than life! It has everything a romance novel should, including a handsome hero, a beautiful heroine and many interesting support cast members. It has heart-rending problems and dangers for the characters to encounter and overcomem. And, of course, it includes the courting with the excitement and the heartbreak of falling in love. This was the third in a trilogy and I had already read the first in the series. I wish I had read the second before reading this book, although it will stand alone. It makes you curious to know the backstory so I guess if you read this one first you will go back and read Paper Roses and the second in the series too!

Life turns inside-out when Harriet Kirk decides to uproot her five siblings and move them to Ladreville, Texas. Harriet hopes to find a fresh start where old rumors and grudges don’t overshadow her younger brothers and sisters…as well as herself. But what she discovers brings more worry than comfort when her brother turns criminal, her past revisits, and her heart teeters on the brink of disaster.
The third and final book in the Texas Dreams Trilogy, Tomorrow’s Garden is a wonderful story of friendship, faith, and family. Amanda Cabot does a beautiful job weaving easy to read, layered text to life in a way that is true to the historic time period. Since this was the first of the trilogy that I’ve read, I searched Amazon for the other titles. Much to my delight, the first book in the series is a Kindle free-read, which I’m excited to pick up. Tomorrow’s Garden may be the first of Ms. Cabot’s fiction that I’ve read, but it won’t be the last.
