This book had my laughing out loud, crying as God convicted me of areas in my life that I, too, need His grace, and staying up long past my husband to read well into the night. Susanna's writing style is easy and relaxed, and she has a great message for all women, no matter how secure you think you are.

Sue's book is refreshing, flavored with frankness, wit, humor, and vulnerability about her own life, all pointing to life-changing truths that we tired supergirls (tsgs) often forget. As I read each chapter title, I frequently thought, Hmm- I think Im good on this one. But the more I read, I came to realize that I had forgotten the truth and succumbed to believing the lie. Here are a few of the parts that spoke to me:With all the craziness, upheaval and unknown of life, Ive fallen prey to Lie #7: God Doesnt Hear Me.In another chapter Sue wrote, [The Liar] often likes to paint the corners of our souls with fear. Doh! He got me again! One of my deepest desires has been to fulfill my God-given purpose and make a difference on this earth. However, as I look at my list of tasks and my list of short-comings, I often start believing Lie #6: God Cant Use Me. I resonate with Sues line in the book that says, Some mornings I feel truly uninspired by who I am. Then she reminds me of the Apostle Peter and the truth that I need to be ready for God to use me.Not only is the content right on the money, but the structure of the book is in perfect, bite-sized pieces for busy supergirls. In an average of just five pages per chapter, Sue is able to engage you and then walk you through to the life-changing principle. Thats only about five minutes of reading per chapter! Its great for reading on your own, but it would even be perfect for a coffee/chat time with fellow tsgs because it has a few simple questions to discuss after reading each chapter.Theres a lot of truth-telling crammed into those five minutes, and when you put the book down, youre left with a lot to chew on. You should buy it because its fun (I laughed out loud at least once per chapter!) and because its inspiring. By the way, after you read this book, you should also go back and read All I Need is Jesus and A Good Pair of Jeans. Or better yet, order them both at the same time!

You know all those questions you have about God that you wonder about but never ask anyone about them... or if you do ask you feel like you never get a straight answer?"If I am this disappointed in myself, how much more must God be disappointed in me?""You realize that if you say 'yes' to God and his plan, you can kiss your good times good-bye, right? (Did you know that if you follow God, you will become the most boring, overly spiritual person in the universe? None of your friends will come to your birthday party. You will be that boring.)""And how exactly can God use me in the state of imperfection that I am in anyway?""But really, does God know me?""Shouldn't God want to give me a good life? Why wouldn't he bless me and keep my kids safe and help me stay sin free?"Susanna Foth Aughtmon answers these questions with humor, personal experiences and scripture. She sets you up with a story from her own life... reveals her deep dark question about how she feels God should respond... tattles on "the Liar" who is the true enemy of your soul... and then shows the truth of God's character using scripture. It truly is like sitting down and having a cup of coffee with a good friend. A very real and authentic friend... who will tell you the truth. Who admits to the fact that life can be hard sometimes... but God is always good. Always for us.

She had me at Bang-tastrophe. There are few people in this world that I truly feel capture the angst, joy, wonder, humor, and passion of womanhood, wifehood, and motherhood in such a real and authentic way as Susanna. Down to earth, right where I am, walking the same road, and wrestling with the same struggles, questions, and unfinished dreams, the transparency and openness through Susannas words reminded me that I am not alone on this journey with God. Sometimes convicting, sometimes affirming, Susanna shines a spotlight on Gods truth, straight from his heart to hers to ours.

Susanna writes with honesty, humor and a conversational style that makes me feel like we are friends chatting over a cup of coffee. Don't be fooled though, her casual style doesn't mean her message is not transformational. In My Bangs Look Good..., Susanna helps make us aware of the lies we unintentionally buy into. When I first glanced over the table of contents and read the lies addressed, like "God is disappointed in me", "God caused my problems", and "I can love people at my convenience, I must admit I thought--good ones, but I don't struggle with those. Then I started reading. And guess what? As Susanna was transparent with the ways these lies impact her life, I saw myself. Because the Liar presents those lies as half-truths and sneaks them past my filter into the depths of my heart. Stinkin' Liar. The best part of Susanna's short chapters is that she counters each of these lies with the Truth from scripture. And as the Truth sinks in--there is freedom and peace and joy. Thank God we have Truth to combat the lies!I read the book quickly--it's an easy, enjoyable read. However, if you ask me I'd suggest you read each chapter slowly, one-at-a-time, and ask God to show you where you might have bought into the tales of the Liar. And then let the Truth sink in. Deep.If you want a book that will make you laugh, make you stop and think and shed Light into the recesses of your heart...you should read this book!

I was excited when I heard my new favorite author was coming out with a second book. Her first, All I Need Is Jesus and a Good Pair of Jeans: The Tired Supergirl's Search for Grace, knocked my socks off. This woman, Susanna Aughtmon, can speak to your soul like she's been living in it. She can put onto paper what I thought my heart alone struggled with. Turns out...nope, it's not just me. The things I struggle with as a woman/mother/wife/person are one of the same for just about every other fellow female around me. It was a breath of fresh air to no longer feel so alone.Aughtmon's new book: My Bangs Look Good and Other Lies I Tell Myself: The Tired Supergirl's Search for Truth, rings true once again. This book focuses on the common lies we tell ourselves as women of God.Like...Lie #1: God is out to get meor Lie #6: God can't use meor Lie #11: God owes meor Lie #14: I will never be enoughLie #16: I am in control of my own destinyLie #17: I can't hear God's voiceLie #23: I am never going to get free...Each chapter explores one of these common lies, and Aughtmon tells it like it really is. She debunks these lies for us with humor, grace, scripture, and a realness that can refresh your soul and make you feel like you're sitting across the table from a good friend at Starbucks. She's not shy about hiding her flaws, misgivings, or past mistakes. She uses them to disprove the lies we are so apt to believe. And that's just (what I think anyway) what God wants us to do for each other. My favorite lines from the book come from Lie #17: I can't hear God's voice. Aughtmon says this:"But the truth is, God has never stopped speaking. He speaks through his creation. He speaks through his Scripture. He speaks through his people and speaks through circumstances and trials and blessings." Amen. He clearly speaks to women's hearts through Aughtmon too. I'm thankful for this book.
