Momology is one of my 2 favorite books I've read in the past year. What do I love about Momology? First and foremost, I love its message. But don't be fooled by the byline. Momology is not a step-by-step guidebook for child-rearing. More accurately, it is a guide to helping you be the best mom you can be, which will have the incidental side-effect of helping you raise great kids. So really, it's a book about raising yourself as a mom, so that the raising kids part will just flow naturally.

How does Momology help you raise yourself? By reminding you of your strengths, and guiding you to redirect your weaknesses, Momology meets you where you are, and helps you devise a plan for moving forward.

Besides the brilliant theme of the book, the format is its other selling point. I know style and format preferences vary a great deal among readers, but I can't imagine there's a mom out there who wouldn't love the 3-8 minute segments this book is divided into. Perfect for getting a section done while waiting for soccer practice to end, or a quick read while nursing or at nap-time. And with each mini-section ending with a couple of practicum questions, you're able to instantly apply a new concept to your life. Only a fellow mom could devise such a clever mom-friendly strategy!

Summary: Any book that can remind a mom of her strengths is worth its weight in gold... but a book that can make her feel optimistic about her shortcomings is priceless!

It was difficult to engage with the format of this book. I also found that you had to REALLY dig to get at the occaisional bit of good information that was buried deep in the drivel. A real flop as far as a MOPS book went. I have come to expect higher quality from the curriculum books. Dropped the ball on this one, guys.

Momology - I was very impressed. Reading this book made we understand why I have heard such wonderful things about MOPS (Mother's of Preschoolers). What Shelly Radic has written isn't really a parenting book even though the title talks about "shaping great kids". In all honesty, this is a "mom" book. This books encourages you to look deep into your soul at the how's, why's, and the truth of being a mom. The book is divided into four sections: Core (you on a personal level), Finesse (art of mothering), Circle (those around you), and Grandscape (God and the world around you). Each of these sections are divided into easy-to-read sections. Specifically created for MOPS groups, the book is set up for discussion. But, I believe this book would be a great book to read on your own and to journal your thoughts to the various questions as you go along. If the web is a place for you to share your thoughts, a forum has been set up at http://www.mom-ology.org/. The questions are thought provoking and can be used by the Holy Spirit for growth. So, whether you have a MOPS group near or not, you can still reap the benefits. Get a group of ladies together for a neighborhood book study. Or use this book as a personal study. Another great one from MOPS. This is a wonderful biblestudy/devotional for mothers. I really enjoyed the unique layout of the book. I like the testimonies that dealt with each topic. It made the book more personal and engaging. It brought to light that though each of us is unique in our mothering style we all face very similar in our experiences and reactions. This would be great for a group or individual.Thank you Baker Publishing for the review copy.
