In this book, Joel Hunter, Pastor of a mega church in Florida, sets out to broaden what he considers to be a Christian conservative agenda that is old, ineffective, to narrow and taken for granted by the Republican party. He is well positioned to do this since he is a member of the Christian Coalition Board and has long experience as a pastor in dealing with political issues. At the same time he still keeps a strong pro-life agenda and holds strongly to his conservative evangelical position. But he also argues that the Bible would have Christians be as concerned about poverty, injustice, pollution, and disease as they are about their traditional family values. In this, he is typical of the new breed of evangelical , such as Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church.His book is well written and logically put together, beginning with a critique of the present position of the Christian right, why it is ineffective, the political myths that influence it, and how its position can be changed so as to be more effective for God. At the root of the political problem for all governments is the sin problem, and this is spelled out in a full chapter. Consequently he does not see politics as the answer to the countries or the worlds problem, but that faith in God is. Consequently Hunter does see that politics can and should work for the good of all, so he spells out some very practical ways that Christians can be active participates in the political process. He suggests a more effective and practical way than just stuffing voter recommendations under windshield wipers in church parking lots. For this section, the template is, surprisingly, Pilate. Here we are given a number of helpful principles.People who read this book will become aware that the a new agenda, and for the good, is taking place in evangelical circles.
