David C. Cook A Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain and God's Sovereignty

For more than forty years Joni Eareckson Tada has been confined to a wheelchair as the result of a diving accident that left her a quadriplegic. In A Place of Healing she shares her current struggle with physical pain and the mystery of suffering in light of a God who heals. If you are suffering any kind of pain or suffering (who isn't?), reading this book will provide you with the hope you need to live a life of joy. Jacketed hardcover.

Footnote: Since initially penning this book, Joni has been diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Her prayer is to keep moving forward, giving God the glory, as she moves through her new "valley of the shadow of death." For updates on Joni, visit JoniandFriends.org.

Handed the book out in advanced and then used it as a base for a weekend retreat. Solid answers for a difficult and sensitive issue. Joni has her share of experience to speak from.

As a Christian with family members in need of physical healing this book offered real food for thought. The conviction of Joni that our suffering has a purpose and sometimes is to encourage others more than ourselves truly moved my heart. After a read like this one I can continue in my prayer life believing that God is answering in ways I cannot imagine. When Joni tells how her suffering has brought others to Christ my heart is humbled and I move on knowing God is in this regardless of what I see before my eyes. It was an encouragement. To see her heart and dedication to bring others to Christ fuels my heart!

What great insight and help for anyone struggling with pain, illnesses or just about any difficulty. Beautifully addresses the age old "human" question of "why"? I am so grateful that Joni continues to generously share her insight...a continued blessing.

Joni's honesty really impressed me. She has faced the tough issues many Christians have faced (pain and suffering) but were afraid to voice. The book is her journey, but it may be that of many others, and the outcome glorifies God. It makes our struggles seem like nothing compared to hers, and yet she has allowed the Lord to overcome. I highly recommend this reading.

Few, very few, Christian authors have earned my respect to the degree that their name on a book jacket immediately attracts my interest. Over the years, Joni has become one such author. And this book neither disappoints my high expectation of her writings nor is it an easy work to set aside once it is begun to be read. While some of her earlier titles reflect past events or episodes from her personal life which, in hindsight, she filters through a theological lens, "A Place of Healing . . ." is Joni's view of God and her personal relationship with Christ written while a period of suffering is presently unfolding. I find it to be a fresh and honest approach to the question of faith in God in the face of pain. In short, I highly recommend this book.

Joni Eareckson Tada shares her heart in this wonderful book about healing. She talks much about how God is able to heal, but does not always choose to heal. She discusses her struggle with excruciating pain that has caused her to look to God more often than ever before.

This book is amazing. As one who deals with chronic pain, the words of encouragement were uplifting. All of us, at some time in our lives are going to have to deal with physical problems. Joni helps put things in proper perspective and guides the reader through Bible references, and points the reader in the right direction in order to develop the correct mindset to deal with pain and suffering. There are some deep truths in this book which will take time to fully absorb and live out. I will be re-reading the book slowly and buying the CD audio book as well.

Thank you to David C. Cook for my free copy for reading/reviewing.
In A Place of Healing Joni Eareckson Tada addresses the hard question of why do horrible painful tragic things happen? Why does God allow suffering? Can't He miraculously heal us, or prevent us from having to walk through that fiery trial? In trying to deal with these questions I've known some who have walked away from believing in a God that would allow suffering? As a young woman in 1967, Joni Eareckson Tada was injured in a diving accident and became a quadriplegic. In the past few years she has endured chronic pain. This year she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has undergone surgery and chemotherapy. With much humility and grace Joni addresses this question of suffering. As if she were sitting beside me and reading to me herself, in her tone there is a steadfastness--an unmovable belief, that no matter what happens in this life, she knows God is sovereign; and if He has allowed a suffering to happen to her, then there is a reason for it. I am reminded of a verse in the story of Esther, "for such a time as this?" The struggles and hardships that we go through can be a encouragement to others when they are going through similar circumstances. Our response to our sufferings and trials can also be a testimony of the One who brings a perfect a peace, no matter what is going on around us, or to us. Joni is forthright in letting us know that in the beginning years after her diving accident she prayed for God to heal her. Eventually she rested in the fact that this was not going to happen. Joni has been a blessing to so many people by sharing her testimony. She has been a blessing in traveling around the world speaking to others that are in wheelchairs. She has a wheelchair ministry that provides wheelchairs to those who need one. She has written several books that have been encouraging and inspiring.
Instead of shutting herself off in her pain and misery she has instead been a powerful voice of encouragement for the suffering. I loved this book! I may never meet Joni this side of heaven but she has been a blessing to me and I thank her, I thank her for saying yes in obedience to letting God use her in a mighty way.

Joni has been an inspiration in my life. I have not suffered as much as she has. I have been praying for her and for my sister in laws that have had breast cancer. My sister is currently scheduled for an operation Thursday in Texas for breast masses. We all need Joni Eareckson Tada's inspirational words of joy in our lives. Thanks for another wonderful book of Hope.
