In his book The Furious Longing of God, Brennan Manning brings out the idea of God's all consuming love for His children. He writes with the idea that Christians just need to relax and enjoying God's love, and not to get hung up on a do and don't list. Live by the direction of the Holy Spirit and God's word. Live by Grace.
He encourages people to take risks with God's direction in their lives and don't be so busy with the day to day stuff that we forget to be productive for God's kingdom.
But there were a couple of things that I had a problem with. First there were places that I felt that the author lost his thought process and left some thoughts and/or ideas incomplete. The other one was that the author was so focused on God's love, he seemed to forget about the other side of God's love which is repentance for sins.
Overall though I liked the message of this book.
I love the positive encouragement that the book brings to it's reader. I think that this book will help people to grow in the Lord and in His Grace.

I have been fortunate enough to see Brennan Manning live a few times and have enjoyed him very much, And while I was excited to pick this book up and read it, I had no idea what to expect from Manning as an author.
The Furious Longing of God
I don’t know what it was – but I just could not get excited about the book. Mr. Manning writes a little bit like a theologian and a little bit like an existential beat poet. His chapters are short and are pretty easy to get through, but each sentence is so richly crafted that if you’re not careful, you can read an entire page and then – STOP – and ask. “What did I just read?” I don’t mind big words when they are in doctrinal papers and systematic research, but when they are trying to be artsy and “deep” … my mind will just drift away.
And even after reading it, I don’t recall much what it was about. Don’t get me wrong, at times I remember enjoying the book, even thinking to myself how I could totally use that idea in a sermon or two.. it’s just… I don’t know.. it wasn’t my “type” of book.
I think Manning was trying to write about how much God loves us (his children) but that point for me kept drifting away every time the author started talking about himself.
I don’t know how much I would recommend it, I’d say pick up Raggamuffin first if you have never read him.

It is written in the forward of this book by a friend and critic that if Brennan Manning writes a book he is going to read it. I CONCUR! Brennan Manning has the gift of allowing me to fully reflect on God's love while simultaneously embracing my flawed humanity. God Bless this man and his message from the glorious Most High!

No one communicates the grace, mercy, and love of Christ better than one who has experienced it...which is what makes Brennan Manning's writings so gut-wrenching real. My own spiritual walk took a positive turn when I read "The Ragamuffin Gospel" several years ago, and I have been helped by each of his books ever since. Manning will not make legalists comfortable (can a legalist ever really be comfortable?), which is why they should read it. His memorable quote is a frequent reminder of God's affection: "God loves me just as I am, and not as I should be." To which I can only add, "And He loves me too much to let me stay that way."
