This 3-book series recounts the story of a young Amish woman, Annie, who is in her twenties but still unable to commit to being baptized. This is because she struggles with her passion for art; something that is prohibited in her Old Order community.
She soon develops a friendship with Englisher Ben Martin, and life just keeps getting more and more complicated as she tries to find God's path for herself.
I really enjoyed this trilogy. Having never been around the Amish, I can't know for sure how realistically they are portrayed in the books. Beverly Lewis grew up in Amish country though, so I assume she knows what she's talking about. The books do well to portray a young woman's desire to follow what she feels is her calling in life, but also to respect her family and her heritage. The only part that I found maybe a little bit unrealistic was how easily Annie's long-time Englisher pen-pal, who comes to visit and stays for several months, fit in and "lived" Plainly.
If you enjoy Amish fiction (or if you just want to give it a try) I recommend these books.
