Bramley Books A Child's Geography--Book and CD-ROM

A Child's Geography: Explore His Earth is a gentle, narration-style approach to geography. Written with a tone of amazement and wonder, students will embark on an exploration of the atmosphere, continents, oceans, climate, plate tectonics, earthquakes & volcanoes, latitude and longitude. Divided into easily-identifiable sections that parents can adjust to complete in a day or multiple days, units include readings, community service ideas, "Too-Fun-to-Resist Excursion" activities, narration prompts with memory joggers, postcard notebooking, and supplemental reading lists.

Written from a Christ-centered perspective, integrated scripture will give kids a Christian view of geography. With full-color and black-and-white photographs on glossy pages, this textbook utilizes all learning styles as students complete their tour of their home-Planet Earth! 168 pages, softcover. Bible verses are from the New American Standard Bible. Volume 1. Designed for grades 1-6, though lessons may be adjusted for older or younger students; this course can be completed in a year.

The included CD-ROM features leveled copywork passages that include definitions, Scripture, hymns and poetry; copywork templates; postcard templates; chapter review tests; a tectonic plate puzzle to print & cut out; world time zone map; and world and continent reference maps.

The text is wonderful! Anne Voskamp has presented an introduction to geography that's very easy to read and discuss. But I was disappointed because at that price, I expected a thick hardcover. It is actually a very thin paperback. Also, it comes with a CD-ROM full of printable activites which are essential to the lesson plans, and no print shop will print them because there's no copyright permission granted. One print shop told me if they had been able to print it, it would cost quite a bit for each set of printables! I think at the price we paid for the book it should have come with the consumables allready printed. I would have returned the product if my son hadn't spilled grape juice on it!

My 3 children (ages 12, 10, 4) and I have only completed the first chapter, but I am really enjoying the activities and discussions we have had so far. Even though the girls are at different levels, they have all been able to participate. They all enjoyed looking at bird's-eye view pictures of the world and making a postcard of what they saw - a suggested project after reading chapter one. I would love it if the book had more color photographs to show them as we read - instead we used the internet to enhance their learning visually. I love that they will learn not only geography, but will also have a biblical view of the world God made and will be encouraged to consider and pray for all the other people who inhabit earth.

The title of this book is a bit misleading. One typically thinks of continents, locations, topography, and maps when you think of geography--or at least I do. This is not what volume 1 is about. Instead, Volume 1 is essentially a study of earth science. Some of the topics covered are the lower and upper atmospheres, the continents and oceans, the structure of the earth, latitude and longitude, and earthquakes and volcanoes. Typically, all of these fall under the study of earth science.
What makes this curriculum different are two particular aspects of how Ms. Voskamp writes about this subject.
1) She endeavors to inspire a wonder of God's creation in students. Frequently, scripture is cited and God is given frequent credit for his creation.
2) She is not disparaging of others who do not recognize that this world we live in is God's creation. I think it is wise to speak the truth in love, but we do not need to be disparaging.
The book is made up of 11 lessons. These lessons could be done once or twice a week. They are similar to unit studies, but I wouldn't divide them up over more than 2 days. In each lesson, there is a portion to read with your children. Then, there are a few short comprehension questions. After the lesson, students are asked to write a post card to someone about what they learned. There are templates for post cards on the CD-ROM enclosed with the book. You could mail the post cards or collect them in a notebook. Then, there is a section titled Reaching Out to His World which is intended to prompt students to think about the needs of other people. A list of possible books you can read for further resources follows. For each lesson, a field trip idea or other exploration and learning craft are also included.
As I read through this book, I was very impressed. I look forward to using this curriculum with my children. It lends itself to working well with multiple elementary age children. I think this curriculum would best be suited to grades 1-6. I loved how she spoke about the Lord and creation. I have been looking for a book like this that would help me explain that God has created everything and how marvelous that is! The sections on reaching out to the world will open up great opportunities to help my children become more aware of the struggles and suffering of others. I read through each craft and thought they were all feasible, made with inexpensive ingredients, not too labor intensive, and would be genuinely fun.
The only suggestion I have is in regard to supplemental resources I'd recommend. Definitely, you'll want to have a globe. There may also be concepts in this book that are difficult for students to understand the first time around. Beakman's World is an old show that you can watch instantly on Netflix. Several of the episodes are on concepts in this book. Veritas Press publishes a book and workbook (sold separately) titled Legends and Leagues. This book and some of the workbook could be tacked onto the end of this curriculum. It is helpful that each lesson has suggested reading resources. You may find that these resources help make up for the lack of pictures in this book. The pictures in A Child's Geography are small and there aren't as many as I have typically found in science books at the library.
I love the content of this book. It is well written. I do wish there were more pictures, but that can be supplemented. My plan is to use this in our fourth grade curriculum. I will follow it up with an Evan-Moor geography book and then do a study of the state we live in.
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from Bramley Books.

The book is cleverly written to help children visualize the various geography concepts. However I was very disappointed to find political correctness. When speaking of the ozone layer, there was no need to extrapolate on man's causing the depletion of the ozone layer. This was an obvious political message. As there is no broadly agreeable scientific proof, there was no reason that such indoctrination be made. I simply crossed out the section and skipped it. On the editing part: I found the use of "like" instead of "as" repeatedly throughout the book. This led me to make the corrections myself. My children need to listen to proper written English.

We've just done the first couple of chapters but the kids seem to enjoy it. Im doing this book with my 9 yr old & 6 yr old & it's working well for both. My 4 yr old is able to jump in on the projects with us. This is my 1st year homeschooling and it is so simple to follow & still gives lots of great info the the projects are super simple but super fun!

We really like this book! It is so much more interesting than your ordinary Geography. And my children are learing things I never learned in school. There's enough review that they seem to remember all they learn, too.

As I have parused through this book, I have been very impressed. I merely thought that it was going to talk about different parts of the world. What this book actually is is a good introductory to earth science. What makes it even more of a gem is that it incorporates activities that can be used for writing activity and art...not to mention the service oriented projects that are included. It is a fabulous find.

My only fault with the book was that it is paperback. For $30 it should be hardcover. The contents however, are really very good. Full of activities and suggested reading if desired. I think we'll be working through it this summer instead of waiting until fall.

What a WONDERFUL book! Each chapter presents an aspect of geography in very clear, plain language. It also gives credit to God for the design of the world. The last part of each lesson is a postcard to describe your "travels" and there are other activities and books that are recommended (but NOT required to successfully complete the course). This was another great purchase from CBD!

We bought the e-book version of this when Knowledge Quest first created it, and we loved it so much we bought the hard copy of the book when it came into print! (Snuggling on the couch with a good book with my five children is so much better than reading from a computer screen.)We used this book in correlation with another Geography curriculum; we loved the way the narrative style incorporated all the things that we were learning in a grand story of the incredible world that surrounds us. Highly recommended by everyone in our house!

We bought this program to use with 3 children from 5th-1st grades. I wanted to cover the make up of the earth but finding a Christian curriculum that isn't too overwhelming can be very hard. We loved the focus on Christ, an opportunity to write (we made a scrapbook with our cards), an the *option* to read more in depth. Extra books are not necessary but if a topic really interests your child you can read more with an enclosed list. My oldest son was very interested in weather while another in volcanoes. They each read their own books, or I read to them, so they really enjoyed this book.

This is an absolutely wonderful geography book! I am using it for children ranging from 6 to 12 (and in between) and they all enjoy it.I especially like the "The Reaching Out To His World" sections which give a practical application and perspective to what the children are learning. We love that there isn't a workbook with preselected questions or fill in the blank type activities. Rather there are activity ideas, narration type questions and a postcard home activity after each chapter that allow the children compile their own thoughts and express their individuality. This is a wonderful "cuddle up the couch" together type of material and I can't recommend it enough:-)

This is more than your typical geography book. In addition to such mundane terms as the equator and the hemispheres that we are all familiar with, you'll learn about the atmosphere, seismic waves, the hydrosphere, cartography...166 pages may not seem like much but this book has a lot to offer. Its conversational style and well thought out activities will make it a welcome addition to your homeschooling library. Examples of activities are making a model of the atmosphere, making an edible earth out of ice cream, investigating the earth's plates with play dough (including a recipe for making your own play dough), making a clock to tell the world's timezones, and much more. It includes a CD with templates for some of the activities as well as copywork. But what I love about this book is its focus on the fact that this is God's world, not ours and how awesome His world is. The quality of the book itself is very good, the pages are thick and glossy, and full-color pages are alternated with black-and-white pictures. My only real qualm is that this book is not available in hardcover, preferably a library binding, because I know I'll be using it for many years to come!
