Dr. R. T. Kendall writes a compelling book about how God can use anyone to do anything for Him. Elijah is one of the best known and beloved men in the Bible. Elijah not only walked with God, but he talked with God. God gave Elijah special opportunities to show the people of Israel glimpses of who He really was. The book starts with a little background information on Elijah, and how we can related to as well as learn from Elijah’s life. Kendall then transitions into the next step we take and how we need to have wisdom for the journey. For much of Elijah’s lifetime he was running for his life. I know he relied heavily on the Spirit of God and God’s strengthening power to sustain him in his wilderness years. Life is full of disappointments, but in these moments we will reflect back and see how God worked through the entire situation. Dr. Kendall explains that life should not surprise us and there are “amazing and surprising ways Gods supplies our needs (page 50). Occasionally it is difficult to see God in the moments of trial and disappointment, but even Elijah fought through to see the glory of God. This book details the ups and downs of Elijah’s life and how it can correlate to ours. The question we need to ask ourselves is do we really want more of God in our lives and if so, what are we going to do about it?
Dr. Kendall is a best selling author who is a much sought after conference speaker. Chosen books is a publishing group of Baker Publishing. I would like to take the time to thank Chosen books for sending me this book for review. I was not compensated for this review.

If you enjoy diving deep into scripture and really taking it down and understanding it, than you will enjoy this book.
Each chapter focuses on a specific part of the scripture that talks about Elijah. The author takes the scripture to a place that we can really understand and believe that God can use anybody He chooses.
What I really enjoyed was reading this book right after I read Reign: The Chronicles of Queen Jezebel. It really gave a new understanding to read the fiction book first that has Elijah in it and then dive into the scripture.
The author takes you all the way from Elijah giving the prophecy of no rain until he is taken up into Heaven and Elisha takes over.
Elijah really was just a normal guy who was prideful at times and made mistakes just like us, but God used him in a powerful way. The main idea that I took away from this book was that even though I can fall so far from all God wants for me He can still use me and He can use you too.

I’ve never read a book by R.T. Kendall that has failed to speak directly into some area of my life and encourage, challenge, and cheer me on in my faith. “These Are the Days of Elijah” is no exception. In this sketch of the prophet Elijah and his ministry, R.T. Kendall manages to discuss 1) the problem with cessation theology 2) the need for preparation in ministry 3) God’s unfailing provision for our needs 4) the uncomfortable reality that faith means taking risks and being willing to go outside our comfort zone 5) the importance of waiting patiently on God and being persistent in prayer 6) God’s patience with us and our issues 7) the Jezebel spirit 8) God’s vindication 9) the need to be exceedingly careful in invoking the Lord’s name in a prophetic manner 10) and finally, the importance of doggedly pursuing a deeper knowledge of God.
By no means is this an exhaustive list of topics, but I mention these to make this point; the wisdom found between the pages of this book is deep and it’s far-reaching.
Based on a series of R.T. Kendall’s sermons, the tone of this book is conversational. Indeed, I often felt as if I was in the same room as Mr. Kendall, who in my mind’s eye appeared as a grandfatherly figure, dispensing wisdom through casual conversation. There are a few places where the writing is somewhat stilted, mainly because of a choppy transition from one thought to the next, (or one sermon to another), but this does not detract from the value of the content.
Kendall’s exhortation to those who believe they may have a prophetic gift is sure to ruffle your feathers if you come from a charismatic crowd that actively engages in everyone prophesying over one another. While Kendall does believe there are true prophetic voices today, he claims they are rare. He goes on to impress upon the reader the seriousness of invoking the Lord’s name when giving a prophetic word, and gives an excellent teaching on the 3rd commandment – that we not misuse the name of the Lord. If you consider yourself prophetically gifted, then challenge yourself to read “These Are the Days of Elijah” and consider Kendall’s words on this topic. If you just generally desire to grow in your faith and in wisdom this book will serve you greatly on your way.

Elijah was a great prophet. Yet he was also human, with moments of elation and times of doubt and fear. He was extraordinary yet ordinary. His life is an encouragement for, if God could use Elijah, He can use us.
R. T. draws parallels between the culture of Elijah's day and our own. There was an atmosphere of degeneration. He notes that God spoke through Elijah, despite his weaknesses. But first, God had to prepare him.
There are many lessons R. T. reveals in the life of Elijah. Here are some of them. Never underestimate how God might supply your need. Even when God uses you mightily, there will still be more training. You will probably feel deserted by God at some point in your ministry. You will have to go outside your comfort zone. You will probably be misunderstood. You will be tempted to self righteousness. God will chose your successor, not you. You are not promised instant vindication. You might have the Elijah complex (you feel you are the only one standing for the truth). There is a divine strategy behind all that happens to you. The devil will attack you when you are on top.
This is a good book for relatively new Christians who feel that God wants to use them. This book will give insight into God's ways of preparation, what kinds of experiences to expect along the way. The Bible passages are included in the text so this book could be read anywhere, anytime.
R. T. pretty much retells the story of Elijah, adding his own insights. Seasoned Christians may not find much they did not already know. There are no discussion questions included.
