This set contains over 9,000 topics and 3,500 cross-references, including an article on every name of a person or place mentioned in the Bible. It also examines major Bible doctrines and gives opposing articles on controversial topics to ensure a rounded explanation and description. Hundreds of evangelical contributors from many fields of biblical research make this encyclopedia a well-rounded resource. The Dead Sea Scrolls, the Apocrypha and other extrabiblical resources are utilized and explained. This work is based on the Revised Standard Version, however the distinctive readings of the AV and the NEB are included usually as cross-references. ISBE is also an exegetical tool because it provides a brief discussion of problem texts under the English keywords and guides the exegete to more information that is found in other scholarly resources. Each entry provides a maximum amount of information in compact form, including pronunciation, etymology, and variant renderings. This is a must have for any biblical scholar.

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia is a wonderful Bible tool to have on hand. It helps to enhance my knowledge and understanding of God's Word through His Holy Bible. I have several Bible reference tools that I use, but I love my husband and my encyclopedia set. It's a great benefit to us in our Bible Study time. I have provided two reviews for multi-volume sets – the ISBE and the "IVP Dictionary of" series. This review is very similar to my IVP Dictionary of one because I fee that both would be wise purchases and each have their own strengths and weaknesses.
I got this set in seminary and it was very helpful in writing papers and doing research. I continue to use it in writing sermons and in other theological endeavors. There are numerous Bible dictionaries that exist – from the one volume starters to the multi-volume works like this one. If you are a student, a pastor or a lay-person who wants to know the Bible more and are looking for a very useful and inexpensive all-around set, this would be a wise purchase for your library.
There are useful one-volume works and while they are helpful starts, these won’t be as in-depth as something like this. My main problem with this set is the formatting – it could be a lot better. It’s easier to lose your place in longer articles and harder to skip to the parts that you may want to focus on. But overall it’s a great deal and like the IVP Dictionary of set, would make for a wonderful addition to your individual or church’s library.

This encyclepedia is exhaustive in content. Conservative and informative, a must for any serious student of the bible.

As a Bible student, this is an excellent resource for exegesis work. Whether writing a paper or forming a sermon, I've found this encyclopedia set extremely helpful. I'm proud to have it in my library and look forward to using it throughout my career.

These books were everything they said they were and more. I am very pleased with them and they are fill with great information. They would be high on my list of recommendations of every student of the Word of God minister or lay person.

I occasionally borrowed my associates copies of this encyclopedia and am now glad to have my own set. I find the articles very thorough and helpful for personal study and sermon preparation. The specific details provided help to beef up sermons and presentations. This is simply a good tool to have in your study if you deliver the Word of God to people. I hope to use well and enjoy fully this set.

Get ready for a serious Bible study tool when you buy this. This is a cream of crop Bible dictionary. It is jam packed with exegetical information such as language & historical meaning. If you want the cadillac of Bible dictionaries this is the one to get...however this is text heavy with some pictures...this is exegetical meat.

Without hesitation, this set gets five stars. First, the volumes are attractively presented, better than in the product photo. Second, the articles that I have thus far read are written with more respect for the sanctity of Scripture than those in the much more expensive and, to my mind, inferior six-volume 'Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary'. Third, the photographic content is far superior to the miserable effort made by the 'Anchor' publishers, with many colour photos. Fourth, this set is heavily underpriced. Once again, CBD make a wonderful resource available at a giveaway price. My recommendation: if you're in the market for an encyclopedia, ignore the overpriced 'Anchor' set. Do not hesitate to buy this product. Fantastic value for money!!!

My Pastor recommended this set to me. In a short two weeks I have found this set amazing. I have been leading a Bible study on the Pilgrim Feasts of the Lord and this set has been so valuable and informative in my quest for in depth knowledge. Actually, I recommended it to the entire class. This set is a must for the serious Bible student, or anyone who earnestly desires to understand and study the Word of God. I highly recommend this set. An excellent value for the price!

I challenge you. If you can read and comprehend all the resource material in these volumes you will not have time to do much else. I was so facinated by the set I tried to read every article. Oh well, I know I always have the best if I need It. Get the set you too will give it a 5+ rating

I have not been able to extensively use this resource but I have been happy with the information I have used. I am still a proponent of using several sources to get an better overall understanding. I use this resource in tandem with the Anchor Bible Dictionary and the Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia. Some of the articles are better than others and the outlines are very helpful when trying to find a specific fact in a more lengthy section.

This set is everything it is advertised to be. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. The reviews that I read really helped me to make up my mind, so I now find a lot of value to the reviews, because I put it to the test. This is a great reference set! To not have this in your personal library, especially at this price, would be a shame.

Purchasing the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia was a great acquisition for me. These book are full of images and a wealth of information. The text is easy to read and the graphics are well done, with many photos included. The price was what originally swayed me to purchase them, but knowing what I do now, I would still purchase them at twice the price. All of the books arrived on time and in great shape and are now a powerful resource as I work on my masters in theological studies.

When I was attending a Christian University, I found these volumes as a valuable resourse. They are great for both introductory information and in depth discussion on numerous bible subjects. I have purchased 3 or 4 sets for my friends and family. There is alot of value here for the price.
