Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. The Gospel of Matthew: New International Commentary on the New Testament [NICNT]

France's masterful The Gospel of Matthew [NICNT] focuses on exegesis of Matthew's text as it stands rather than on the prehistory of the ("Q") material or details of the Synoptic problem. The exegesis of each section is part of a planned literary whole supplemented, rather than controlled, by verse-by-verse commentary, allowing the text as a complete story to come into brilliant focus and integrity.

Rather than being a "commentary on commentaries," The Gospel of Matthew [NICNT] is concerned throughout with what Matthew himself meant to convey about Jesus and how he set about doing so within the cultural and historical context of first-century Palestine, especially by frequently drawing on the distinctive culture of Galilee and the social dynamics of Roman occupied Israel.

The provided English translations of the Matthean text are France's own, and provide the basis for the commentary. This adept translation uses contemporary idioms and, where necessary, gives priority to clarity over literary elegance. Amid the wide array of Matthew commentaries available today, France's world-class stature, clear focus on Matthew's Jesus, his careful methodology, and his user-friendly style, promise to make this volume an enduring standard.

Though I am just a layman, I believe this is an excellent commentary, it is very readable, and helps me understand the true meaning of the Greek behind the English translation. CBD was true to their word, I first ordered John, and they exchanged it for Matthew with no questions asked within the 30 day time frame. Great commentary, great price, and great service.

It's a little early to be providing a review haven't actually been through enough of it yet, but CBD sent me an e-mail to remind me of giving a review. With that said, from what little time I've had with it, it seems to be a scholarly commentary on Matthew. If CBD wouldn't want a review in a 2 week or less time frame I might have been able provide a bit more.
Their delivery time was consistent with previous past orders I've made. No complaint with the book or delivery time.

This book is a very readable study of the Gospel of Matthew. I like the overall discussion of each pericope before the detailed exegesis of each verse. I also appreciate the discussion that goes on in the footnotes. This book is very helpful in placing the text in a coherent context, that allows sermon preparation to be be both fruitful and theologically sound.

This is the best commentary on Matthew I have seen. If you are on a limited budget then this book offers a stand alone commentary for the Gospel of Matthew. The Pillar and Word Biblical Commentaries, while both good, offer no new information that is not contained in this book, while in most cases offering far less. An excellent purchase and very readable.

I've been using this now for a couple of months. There are currently many excellent volumes on Matthew. I've used many of them (Davies & Allison, Allen, France's TNTC, Keener's big one, Morris, McNeile, Plummer, Gundry, Hagner, & Carson). France's NIC on Matthew has jumped into this field and in my mind, is one of the best. He decided not to make his book a "commentary on commentaries," so he's not bogged down in worthless details of every scholar's opinion. His judgments are informed and sane, and it's a pleasure having his lifelong experience with the gospels helping me as I work though Matthew. I highly recommend this book.
