Fortress Press Discipleship: Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works [DBW], Volume 4

Much more then most modern Westerners, Bonhoeffer understood that to be a disciple of Christ means sacrifice. This volume is freshly translated from the German critical edition of Bonhoeffer's interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount. It provides a more accurate rendering of Bonhoeffer's original text; and includes extensive study aids and commentary to clarify the theological meaning and social context of what it means to follow Jesus in modern-even dangerous- times.

The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works Series offers material from some of Bonhoeffer's most influential thoughts along with biographical information about his life, ministry, and imprisonment. Bonhoeffer was a man of strong convictions; this dedication to the wholeness of the Gospel cost him his life at the hand of the Nazi regime during World War II. Each volume in this series is rich with Bonhoeffer's wisdom of what it takes to follow Christ in a fallen world.

I have read the other edition, Cost of Discipleship, and really enjoy this edition and think it's a good value in comparison to that book, even though it is more expensive. I'm still digesting the material but have appreciated the different translation and the more faithful rendering of Bonhoeffer's way of speaking.

Its amazing that this book was written 70 years ago. Its message, though timeless, is sorely needed for the American Church today. The distinction between the American Church and the World is often blurred as it escapes the legalism and tradition of the past. Bonhoeffer helps us understand who we trully are as believers and our resoponsibilities as we mature into disciples. He helps us to see how disciples together form the church comminity and impact the world as the Church. Material from this book could inspire years worth of sermons, messages and lessons. The writing is a bit tedious at times; it is not a fast read. It is worthy of a home in my library - and additional copies as gifts to others
