Inter-varsity Press Misquoting Truth: A Guide to the Fallacies of Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus

One of the problems of living in a non-discerning culture is the fact that everything gets put on the same level. Christian books share the same 'Religion' shelf with anti-Christian and cultic material. Such is the situation where books like Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus can gain a foothold and credence with readers. Published by a popular secular publishing house, Ehrman gets no true peer review for his writings.

Strangely enough, Timothy Paul Jones' welcomes this, and his book, although a thorough and deep refutation of Ehrman's faulty logic and conclusions, rather takes the tack of lauding Ehrman for creating something that encourages ordinary people to think about faith in critical ways. Jones seeks to give individuals the rest of the story Ehrman started to tell.

Adequately countering the criticisms Ehrman levels at Christianity in his books, Misquoting Truth goes back to the faulty premises, dismantles them and rebuilds them with fact rather than speculation, then supports the historical faith with humor, warmth and solid analytical investigation.

This was fabulous - a brilliantly presented debunking of Bart Ehrman's poorly thought-out MISQUOTING JESUS and Ehrman's basic apostasy regarding Jesus and His Word. Jones answers very specific and legitimate questions regarding the Book of all books! Well researched and extremely readable presentation. Thanks for a great book!

Jones systematically dismantles Bart Ehrman's "Misquoting Jesus". In total honesty Jones indicates where Ehrman's thesis is correct but then exposes where Ehrman embellishes the truth and is scholastically dishonest to the NT texts and what they tell us about Jesus and the early church. Well written and well balanced.

Outstanding--Refutes point by point Bart Ehram's basic theory that the scripture of the New Testament are unreliable.

The book claims to examine/refute some points Ehrman makes to give the reader another conclusion to examine (the book is <150 pages after all). The author succeeds in this. He explains where he agrees & disagrees with Ehrman. This allows the reader to make an informed decision. My 1 gripe with the book is minor: all footnotes are @ the back of the book (vs. bottom of the page) so I had to repeatedly flip back & forth.

i found that this book was not as exposing of dr. erhman's thinking as it advertises. though it has good moments, it just doesn't get the job done as one would like. bart ehrman's point of view is lacking in many aspects and one is understanding of God and how He does things. this book should have pointed out that we do not need the 'original' mss. because God has promised to provide His word for all, intact. plus any claims by ehrman of mistakes fall flat because there are no originals with which he can compare. this is what this book should have focused on and it doesn't as too often it agrees with much of ehrman's complaints and fails to prove why he is wrong. ehrman is wrong because his arguments are not based on truth but a whining, complaining unbelief which blinds his eyes to the way God works and writes. one of the keys to reading the Bible is faith and we must have faith that God has preserved His word and leads us to the write translations which guide us in our lives. there are many translations out there BUT not all are right or God's word but that doesn't justify abandoning God, it just means we need to rely on Him more.

Timothy Paul Jones does an excellent job of explaining what Ehrman's claims are and responding to them. He shows where Ehrman is wrong even while letting the reader know to what extent he makes factual statements. In doing so, Jones also gives the reader a very good introduction to the subject of textual criticism.

An excellent book that encourages the reader to look beyond the arguments of Bart Ehrman to the documents and history of the New Testament. If you are seeking answers to the historical accuracy of the Bible, this is a book you must read. Jones writes in a way that is readable, yet intelligent, offering answers to issues surrounding the reliability of the New Testament. Well documented and thoroughly researched, Misquoting Truth will encourage your faith to deepen, and your understanding of textual criticism to undergird your belief in the reality of Christ.
