IVP Books The Path of Celtic Prayer: An Ancient Way to Everyday Joy

Poet, pastor, and professor, Miller excavates spiritual gold from the ancient Celts, highlighting six types of prayer: Trinity (loving God); Scripture (praying the Bible); long and wandering (life as one unending prayer); nature (praise in ordinary life); lorica (asking for protection); and confessional (agreeing with God). Wonderful guidance for the circumstances and uncertainties of our own lives! 170 pages, hardcover from InterVarsity.

Haven't had the chance to read this book cover to cover, actually only a glance at a few sections, but I am anticipating getting into it further. I have been concerned with the lack of a good understanding amongst some Christians of the Trinity. It would seem that the early Celtic church did not have this problem and it is so evident in their prayers as recorded in this book. I hope I will learn to pray more effectively from their example.

I was very skeptical at first of it's possible spiritual value because of some of the history surrounding the Celts and Druids and so on. But after starting to read it, it was quite refreshing. Miller did a good job I think of keeping legend and lore separated from spiritual truths. Miller reminds us of how the faith of our ancestors can still help guide and teach us through our daily struggles.

This is a beautiful, lyrical book. It enhanced my prayer life, and I enjoyed learning about the spiritual life of the ancient Celts. I especially recommend it to those who enjoy beautiful language and poetry.
