I read this book 20 plus years ago as a graduate student in a home fellowship group and just began rereading it last month. I'm 51 now, have been married 21 years, and have three teenage sons. I think so much of it I would like to buy copies for some of the young ladies in my high school Sunday School class. In an age when most assume the norm for every young woman (as well as young men) is preparation for a job/career, what greater, more noble calling can there be than providing the thoughtful, positive environment for family? Mrs. Schaeffer uses considerable words framing her points, but her points are GOLD. She sets forth both the value of such a commitment along with practical examples. Far from creating a sense of guilt about perfection, she demonstrates that in this fallen world we will never do it perfectly but that the effort is worth every sacrifice. The beauty, creativity, and energy mothers/wives can bring to families blesses God and His people.

It is a shocking revelation of the "trendiness" of Christian book buying that I am the first person to review this treasure. This book should be seminal reading for all mothers and fathers in Christendom! If you only read one book on the family or motherhood, this one is it. Edith writes like a painter paints, filling the entire canvas with color, neglecting not a part. She makes beautiful a vision of mother, father, family, and home. She has the voice of a prophet, calling Christians to invest in the very environment that will make or break the human race: the family. As a pastor, if there was one book on the family that I could make every person in the church read, it would be this one.

This book has really inspired me to elevate my thinking about our purpose as a family. The home as a center of creativity motivated me to encourage our children in their creative pursuits. I borrowed this book from our homeschool group library so I didn't get to finish it before it was due, but the first few chapters were really great giving me a vision as well as many useful examples of building family relationships. I shared the idea of a lovely breakfast tray with my daughters and a month later they served my husband and me breakfast in bed for our anniversary! I read parts to my husband, too about how special the opportunity is to have good memories and how wasted the time spent bickering is. I can't wait to get another copy so I can finish this book!
