Matthew writes his Gospel to a group of Christians who do not yet know they are Christians. They are faithful followers of Jesus who are still members of the synagogue community in Galilee. But the time is rapidly approaching when they will be expelled from the synagogue and from Jewish life. They are about to lose their identities. Then they will become consumed with the penultimate, the next to the most significant question: "Who Am I?" Matthew's Gospel will provide the answer they are so hungry to hear. He will uniquely define their new identity in Jesus of Galilee. Then they will be free to give their lives to the ultimate question that takes a lifetime to learn, "Who Is Jesus?"
