Touchstone The Cost of Discipleship

The Cost of Discipleship compels the reader to face himself and God in any situation. Bonhoeffer speaks of "Cheap Grace": preaching forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, communion without confession. "Cheap Grace" is grace without discipleship. "Costly Grace" is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift which must be asked for, the door at which a man must knock. "It's costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."

I am about half way through the book thus far. This should be a must read for every Christian. Bonhoeffer challenges readers with the applicable truth that GRACE is not GRACE without discipleship. Grace is not cheap but very costly. Discipleship is dependent on Grace and Grace (to be experienced in it's fullness) is dependent on discipleship. He also give one of the best commentaries on the Beattitudes I've ever heard or read. Be challenged in your walk and read the book.

great read, just as applicable to life today as it was 80 years ago. I really enjoyed Bonhoeffer's passion that was evident in the introduction, yet he remains objective in order to practice proper exegesis in the later chapters of the book.

I feel this book was God's divine Provision for me - it corrected bad doctrine I'd learned and encourages me to live a more disciplined life with my Savior, yet in the gentle and beautiful way the Holy Spirit works. Reading "The Cost of Discipleship" has been a process of enlightenment for me and one I am very thankful for.

Incredible reading for a new Christian. Costly grace opposed to cheap grace? Never gave it a thought before the recommendation of my pastor.

My husband was the recipient of this book and has had nothing but good things to say about it so far. He has not yet finished it due to a recent surgery, but he is reading a little every day and is giving it good "reviews" to me!

This book is truly amazing! Dietrich lived during the rise of Hitler in Germany. He stood for the truth of Scripture. He refused to detour from the Faith that the Holy Scriptures call all followers of Jesus to. This book is a great view into that reality.

If you've read his (Bonhoffer's ) story then you will come to understand the passion from which he writes this book . He truly loved the Lord , and laid down his all for Him . Bonhoffer's dedication to the Lord , and his willingness to learn what it truly means to be His disciple fills these pages . A truly good read .

We can only achieve perfect liberty and enjoy fellowship with Jesus when his command, his call to absolute discipleship, is appreciated in its entirety, As a German Lutheran pastor and theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was an exemplar of sacrificial faith. Opposing the Nazis during Hitlers regime eventually giving his life for his Lord at the hands of the Gestapo in 1945, Bonhoeffer truly was a man who died to self in order to be alive with Christ. The Cost of Discipleship truly is about the cost of authentic Christian discipleship... a call by Christ to follow Him through persecution and through rejoicing. This book will greatly encourage you in your walk with Christ and add a whole new revolutionary dimension to the command "follow me." I give it a definite 5 star!

This has to be one of the most blessed books ever. I have felt so much conviction while reading this book, it helped me understand so much of the fundementals of the teaching of Christ. I really know what it means to be a follower of Christ, and the cost of my calling. I've had a major break through because of this book. It has profoundly affected my relationship with God, and made me realize what a blessing being a disciple of Christ, and it made me divinely aware of myself and others. Amen.

Christian, read this book!Dietrich Bonhoeffers, The Cost of Discipleship, is an argument and plea to the believer to heed to the call of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. Bonhoeffer sets his argument up like a seasoned theologian, systematic and clear. If I had to re-title this book I would call it, Christian, Grace is not cheap, so stop living as though it is! I, now, consider myself a reformed believer, and as a good reformist we speak of Grace often. We even speak of the cost of Gods Grace! But truly, rarely, do I see it lived out in a believers life. Thats what this book is about.Beg, Borrow, of Buy, but read this Plea.
