IVP Academic The Universe Next Door: A Basic Worldview Catalog

For more than thirty years, The Universe Next Door has set the standard for a clear, readable introduction to worldviews. In this new fifth edition, James Sire offers additional student-friendly features to his concise, easily understood introductions to theism, deism, naturalism, Marxism, nihilism, existentialism, Eastern monism, New Age philosophy and postmodernism. Included in this expanded format are a new chapter on Islam and informative sidebars throughout.

The book continues to build on Sire's refined definition of worldviews from the fourth edition and includes other up-dates as well, keeping this standard text fresh and useful. In a world of ever-increasing diversity, The Universe Next Door offers a unique resource for understanding the variety of worldviews that compete with Christianity for the allegiance of minds and hearts.

The Universe Next Door has been translated into over a dozen laguages and has been used as a text at over one hundred colleges and universities in courses ranging from apologetics and world religions to history and English literature.

This is one of the text books that we are using in our "Worldview Analysis" Class. I must say at first the book seemed intimidating. But the book is an excellent tool! And a must have on every Christians shelf! Sire does a fantastic job of looking through major worldviews such as Naturalism, Theism, Islamic Theism, Deism, Nihilism, and many others. He breaks each view down into 8 subheadings (1. What is ultimate reality 2. What is the external reality 3.What is a human being (soul, and body or just body?) 4. What happens at death 5. How can we know anything 6. How do we know what is right and wrong 7. What is the purpose of History? 8. What is the overall purpose or goal in mind for this worldview? Through each of these questions he shows ultimately where the worldview ends up. This book I truly believe will enhance your growth in the area of Apologetics!!
