IVP Academic Spirituality According to Paul: Imitating the Apostle of Christ

Spirituality is hip, there is no question. Everyone admires those people who seem to betray an ethereal attachment to nature, to mystical practices, or command some type of other-worldly respect. It's become a chic commodity, with its benefits evoked by images of sunrises and secluded retreats. But are the spiritual characteristics we most admire actually Christian?

When contrasted with the Apostle Paul--who promoted a cross shaped spirituality for those deemed foolish by the world--our commoditized spirituality seems trite. Paul realized that images of crucifixion, burial and resurrection would never be popular images of the spiritual life and thus never attempted to make them so--he merely asked we follow him as he followed Christ.

In Spirituality According to Paul: Imitating the Apostle of Christ Rodney Reeves explores this ancient spiritual path and probes our understanding of what Christian spirituality should be according to Paul's teachings--and actions. In doing so, Reeves illuminates its transformative power and gives us living illustrations of what it means to follow Paul as he followed Christ. Here is a book that joins a deep understanding of Paul with a pastoral and spiritual wisdom born of experience.

Revealing great insight, Dr. Reeves differentiates our Western twenty-first-century thinking from that of St. Paul's world so we can rightly understand Paul's spirituality. This book will help readers step out of their world and into Paul's world. We need more books like this one, which emphasize the world in which the original writers lived because we tend to look through our "window" of the world when reading God's Word. Readers do not need to be theologians to benefit greatly from this book.
