IVP Academic James: Tyndale New Testament Commentary [TNTC]

Appealing to the general reader of the Bible, the TNTC series provides its audience with an exegetical, but non-technical commentary. Readers are not expected to know Greek or Hebrew, only bring the willingness to understand some of the more important issues in New Testament scholarship and learn how they affect our reading and interpretation of the text. For this reason, IVP Academic is reworking this very successful series in its entirety and hopes to bring the series, and its readers, up to date on translations and the latest developments in Biblical Studies.Douglas J. Moo, author of commentaries on several New Testament books (including Romans, Colossians, Philemon, 2 Peter, Jude, and 3 commentaries on James), brings his extensive study and acumen to the TNTC series. Moo focuses on James as a book that provides a call to action; to live the life that should accompany Christian faith at all times. Providing a rich introduction to the background and circumstances of the letter, Moo also discusses the book's major theological themes, such as suffering, and the importance of good works. The commentary proceeds section by section and includes a very helpful "Additional Notes" section on some of James' more difficult and controversial texts (1.21; 2.14; 2.21; 5.14-16). For those who seek to build a solid foundation for continuing education in Scripture, this series is indispensable.

Douglas Moo is one of the best contemporary New Testament scholars, and his wisdom and expertise are evident in this commentary on James. His 42 page introduction gives a good overview of such issues as authorship and context, and the verse-by-verse exegesis is solid and very readable. A bargain for the price!
