James: Mercy Triumphs - Member Book by Beth Moore provides a personal study experience five days a week plus viewer guides for the 8 video sessions of this in-depth women's Bible study. James, Jesus' own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any other New Testament book. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer. 8 video sessions with 7 weeks of print study.

I love Beth Moore and have completed a few of her past studies: Esther, Breaking Free, David, Daniel. There are several different participation levels for this study to choose from: 1. Just watch DVD, 2. Watch DVD and do workbook, 3. In addition to the previous you can also handwrite the whole book of James, 4. Do all the previous plus read all of Melissa's (Beth's daughter) commentaries 5. Do all of the previous plus memorize the entire book of James.
I didn't love this study. I didn't find that any of Melissa's writings added value to the overall study - but just took longer to complete the work that I felt I should do as a small group leader. Additionally, numerous times Beth had us flipping through the Bible to find other obscure references where the same word was used....again, not adding value to the overall study and making the lessons take longer to complete. And since Beth is the master at providing rich insights, I expected there to be more depth to some of the key verses in James (e.g., James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above...", James 3:8 "But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.").
The DVD's were extremely well done (as usual) and added a lot to the overall study. I would definitely recommend supplementing the study with the DVDs.
My least favorite Beth Moore Study....and I really have loved them all!

This is not just for women. Althought Beth is presenting to a group of women, we are doing ths study with couples and everyone loves it. The men aren't as likely to do the homework, however, the DVD sessions are rich enough that anyone will get much from it. Having great discussions each week.

Simplify! Gets to the meat of the Word & yet challenges you to dig as far as YOU want to go in the study. Reveals an ordinary man-James, who became a pillar of the faith. ALL because he met the risen Christ!!

Be aware that the writing style is difficult for non-native English speakers. The vocabulary is complicated, there is much use of plays on words, idioms and poetic type language.

James has always been my favorite book of the Bible. When I saw Beth Moore's Study I knew I had to lead this one. It is the best study I have ever had the pleasure of leading!! She gives so much insight to the book along with her daughter. You will not be disappointed with this study.

What I have completed of the study is very good. Beth Moore is using different techniques than she has in the other studies I have done with her. It is great that her daughter Melissa has worked with her and has written part of this study. I am looking forward to completing it.

I am three weeks into this study and I am loving it. I get together with a group of women every week to watch the video and go over the homework, which is a nice way to do this.
Beth challenges us as usual, making us go beyond what we think we are capable of doing and understanding and I really like that. This study gives you options on your level of participation: if you want to just watch the videos you can, or you can also do the homework, or you can do the homework and read the extra writings by her daughter, or you can do all that plus write a few verses of the book of James every day until you have written the whole book. Or you can do all that AND memorize James! I am doing everything except memorizing the book and loving every minute.

This guide to Beth's teachings is a very rewarding effort. While it takes upwards of 45 minutes for each day's lessons, the understanding and insights gained are so worth the effort. People really enjoy doing it, expecting to grow in their faith! As a leader, people are asking for these kinds of studies--kinds that lead to indepth discussions and personal transformations.

I deeply appreciate all of Beth Moore's Bible studies and her member books are second to none. They provide understanding, challenges, great insight and introspection as Bible lessons are presented. I am studying "James: Mercy Triumphs" on my own and the member book is a great help and useful tool. I highly recommend this study with the use of the member book.
