Oaktara Bringing Them Home

A fictional account of one family's first year of homeschooling, the author manages to pack many current homeschooling topics into this family's journey. Instigated to think about homeschooling because of a creation-evolution difference with a public-school teacher, as well as issues with a son who's slower to read than other students in the classroom, the Knight family is soon discussing and dealing with plenty of other issues. Woven into the storyline, the Knights have to think about--and make decisions about-- socialization, teaching multiple ages at once, deciding to have the mother stay home in order to fulfill the admonition to train up their children, evaluations, field trips, the importance of family over youth culture, how teaching honesty and ethics without the bible is useless, self-esteem in public schools, homeschooling conventions, and other every-day homeschooling situations. An afterward "The Fallacy of a Neutral Public School System" synthesizes the points made in the story. 220 pages, softcover.

My husband and I have so enjoyed reading this delightful book. We are some of the "pioneers" from 36 years back. Elizabeth does such a great job in 'telling it like it is'; of zooming in on the majors and bringing laughter to the 'minors' which homeschool families face and deal with regularly. We took our 3 children out of the public system "against all odds", one might say! We had to compile our own curriculum and swim "up-stream" from the norm of the educational mentality. Now, great-grandchildren are in the family (all 3 of our children home educate their children) and the biblical values and convictions are being passed on to another generation.
You will be challenged and entertained as you read this delightful book. Thank you Elizabeth! - review written by Carolyn

I am so excited to share this next book with you. Bringing them home is a novel about the Knight family's decision to homeschool their 4 children and highlights of that first years journey. This book is a novel with the Knight family as the main characters, but I have no doubt there are real families out there with similar experiences as this book describes.
Author Elizabeth Wiens is the very talented co-author of Destined for Eternity . Mother of 4 girls and homeschooling veteran herself, this novel is a reflection of her own families homeschooling journey. She has done an absolute fantastic job in describing the feelings, uncertainties, strengths and passion of many homeschooling families today.
This book can serve many purposes. Most books out there about homeschooling are informational only and in short can be technical and boring. Since written in novel form, Bringing them home is not only informational, but also encouraging, engaging, personal and interesting to read. In fact, I had a hard time putting it down. What a great tool for first year homeschoolers, rewarding for veteran homeschoolers like myself, and thought provoking for those considering homeschooling or have friends or family who homeschool.
I have personally started a collection of books to give my children when they become adults and have children of their own. Bringing them home is a must have in this collection. I also plan to share this book with friends who homeschool and will most definitely recommend it to those contemplating homeschool or those who find themselves in the first year possibly uncertain of success.
Elizabeth, I would really love to know the name of some of the curriculum resources the Knight family used for homeschooling.
I leave you with one of my many favorite passages of Bringing them Home.
"Why are you angry? I have entrusted these children into your care and ask that you raise them for Me, both for their sakes and for My glory. They are all that you have that is eternal, and I am not asking you to do the impossible. Remember, I will go with you.
Cassey sucked in her breath and looked around the room as if to expect to see someone standing beside her bed, but no one was there. With a shock she realized that the words she'd heard in her heart were true. To train her children for God's glory was the most awesome task God could ever give her. Was she willing to give it her best effort? Suddenly this whole dilemma was not just about the public school vs. the christian school or homeschooling, but about obedience to what God may be directing her to do. How could she best honor God and train up her children for Him, and was she willing to do it?"

Bringing Them Home was a great read! As a new home schooling mom, I was able to take a peek into the life of another home schooling family, one that is just now feeling the call to pull their children out of public education. Cassy Knight faces a whirlwind of emotions when she feels God calling her to make the transition to teaching her children at home, and when she decides to heed his voice, both she and her family are greatly rewarded! Full of fun ideas for home schoolers and an informative array of great books and resources, Bringing Them Home is an encouragement to any mother, father or family who wants to know what home schooling is all about and what to excpect from a balanced, fun, laid back autmosphere of teaching your children at home. It proves that you don't have to be perfect and you don't have to be an expert to have the heart and will to guide your children's education, you just need the right attitude and an adventurous spirit! I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel, that will follow the Knight family through the teen years!

Are our children worth investing our lives into theirs? Do you yearn for a deeper relationship with your kids? Do you wonder what they are thinking but don't have the time to discover their loves and longings? Is family high on your priority list? Do you want them to grow up like you? Do you want them to treasure a faith in a living loving Saviour and King? Why would a family choose to live on a one parent income? Is the huge commitment worth it. You better believe it. Whether you decide to investigate the opportunity of home education or not you will be challenged with our responsibility as parents to bring up our children in the nurture and admonition of the LORD and to pass God's blessing on to others. For those already in the biblical homeschooling community it will be an encouragement to you and a tool to give to others to help them understand why we do what we do. I've watched the author's labour of love. She has lived this journey. I've observed the many hours the author has poured into the pages of this book to challenge you with the value of your family. She's my wife. Buy the book. It's an investment. You won't regret it!
