OakTara Mary in Transit

Poor Zechariah! Fifty years old, his wife is expecting, and a pregnant teenager has moved in. How does he get a word in edgewise? He doesn't. That's what you get for arguing with an angel. What would a childless old priest do if an angel promised him a baby? How would a girl react to a humiliating role in history's greatest miracle? What was the world really like then? How could such a story possibly be true?

All we know about Jesus' birth and childhood is in four chapters of the Bible-chapters containing such unusual events and characters that they read like a fairy tale. But perhaps the truth may become easier to believe by seeing how these events could actually fit together with recorded history. So take Sari, the feisty donkey, who has no problem dispatching troublemakers with a swift kick. Toss in some real tyrants and invented thieves. Let uninvited angels stir it up, and get ready for excitement!

My favorite humor novelist decided to try his hand at a very serious subject in a very serious time…and hit a home run. Everyone wonders about the details of the story of Jesus Christ and every Christmas we wonder anew about the infant Christ. In Mary in Transit you don’t have to wonder anymore. Don Bemis fills up the gaps in the infancy parts of Mary and Joseph’s story well enough that the most curious should be happy. He takes the basic knowledge from the Gospels and turns them into a fun and informative novel that is peppered with his signature humor.
Mary is a fourteen year old girl with a serious problem—she’s pregnant and her own father and mother have kicked her out of the house. Her betrothed, Joseph won’t listen to her—he doesn’t want to see her. The only ones who believe her wild story of an angel is her cousin Elizabeth and Elizabeth’s husband Zechariah. In their old age, they are expecting too, and Zechariah found out what it means to disbelieve the word of the Almighty God.
We get to see the birth and infancy of Yeshua play out across Galilee, Judea, and Egypt. We get to see the details of Mary and Joseph’s life and their experiences. We get to see the history of the times within the panoply of the world and with the light of the Messiah of the Lord God over everything. This book is a great read and especially great for the holidays. You’ll want to share it not only during the Christmas season but at any time with all your friends and relations. I love Don’s novels and I know you’ll like this one.
