Ignatius Press Left To Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust

In the spring of 1994, more than one million people were murdered in the Rwandan genocide. This is the story of how Immaculee survived certain death, along with seven other women, by hiding in a very small bathroom for more than 3 months. Day after day, for months, the killers would search nearby - gleefully chanting "kill them big, kill them small, kill them, kill them, kill them all!"

With uncommon sincerity, Immaculee shares with us her soul's struggle through disbelief to anger and rage and, ultimately, forgiveness. She is living proof of the power of prayer and positive thinking.

Her story will touch you deeply. You will feel her fear, you will cry, and you will ask yourself the same questions that we as a people have been asking forever: How could this happen? Where does such animosity come from? Why can't we just be like God, Who is the Source for all of us? But you will also feel something else most profoundly: You will feel hope, a hope that inch by inch, we as a people are moving toward a new alignment-that is, we're moving toward living God-realized lives. I was fortunate enough to meet Immaculee in person at a retreat in Lincoln, NE. A friend had loaned her book, Left to Tell, to me before the retreat. I had to get my own. Immaculee had such an inspiring message of forgiveness and the power of prayer. Her story was so difficult to read, but she is such a warm, sincere person, who has overcome the most difficult situations imaginable. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I loved every bit of reading this true story. It was educational on the Rwanda conflict between the Hutus and Tutsis. The best part was the example of forgiveness. I shared the book with many friends and they all raved about how wonderful the book is and what a blessing it was in their lives. Surely if she could be so forgiving under the circumstances she lived through, we all felt we could be the same. I would HIGHLY recommend this book.

I was in college during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Its beyond my comprehension to think about the bloodshed that was happening on the other side of the world. Immacule Ilibagiza tells the true story of her life growing up in Rwanda with her loving family. She learned early on that she was in a different tribe than the majority of her neighbors, but never did she consider that they might turn on her and her family. That her friends might someday pick up machetes and guns and murder anyone from her tribe. But thats exactly what happened.Immacules father and brothers encourages her to hide out at a pastors house nearby. He hid her and seven other women in a tiny half bathroom for three months. She could hear the killers roaming the streets on the other side of the wall. She prayed that God would protect her family and the women in the bathroom. But when she finally got out, she was one of the few survivors left to tell what had happened. This is a powerful and shocking story of what evil can do in the hearts of people. The killers were murdering innocents in the streets, women, children, and infants alike. I was amazed at Immacules story of how she grew close to God in the three months she hid in the bathroom, but I was even more amazed at how she learned to forgive those who killed her family and friends. This is hard to read and shares some graphic details of how Immacules loved ones were killed. I strongly recommend it to anyone who harbors hatred against another. To see what this young woman went through and that she rose above the hatred and evil that she had the opportunity to embrace in revenge was inspiring. I am so proud of her.

This is the most inspirational book I have read in a very long time. It has deepened my personal commitment to God and made me more aware of HIS power to sustain us in the midst of our trials and suffering. Only God could bring this young lady out of the chaos in Rwanda and leave her as a living witness of the power of a fully surrendered heart to HIS divine guidance and protection. This is a must read for the world - not just the Christian/Catholic communities.I have been changed on the inside and have begun to pray for this beautiful and strong young woman of faith. What an example of courage and determination to live and tell her story.
