Christian Focus Publications How God Used a Thunderstorm and Other Devotional Stories

The themes of the first book in this series are Living for God and The Value of Scripture. Other themes covered in the series are Missionary Tales and Remarkable Conversions; Honouring God and Dramatic Deliverances; Faithful Witnesses, Childhood Faith and God's Care. Joel Beeke and Diana Kleyn have taken a selection of real life incidents and fictional narratives and developed them into a series of devotional books for children aged 7-12. Scriptural references throughout the book use the King James Version of the Bible and the questions are also based on this version. The stories themselves include a good mixture of historical adventure, childhood experiences, remarkable instances of conversion and dramatic, edge of your seat, rescues from danger!

My daughter and I have been enjoying a devotional story every morning from How God Used a Thunderstorm. These simple stories are perfect conversation starters, and the questions and Scripture references at the end help steer the discussion. How wonderful it is for parent and child to discuss God's truths!

My 10-year-old daughter really likes this devotional, and asks every morning to read it together! The stories have varied length, from about 1 to 5 minutes to read aloud. The language is simple and the points are clear. Sometimes the points are old-fashioned, and I really wish I knew the names of the protagonists, since these are based on true happenings. It would make the stories seem even more real.

Overall, this is an okay book that I read to my two children, ages 6 and 9, every night. My only drawback is that some of the stories are a little old fashioned and hard for my children to relate to. The other dislike is the use of the KJV, which again, is difficult for my children to understand without an explanation. Very traditional.

Our family enjoys hearing these as well as the other inspiring stories in this series! Since some stories are only one page long, we usually read more than one at each sitting. The combination of true life incidents and inspiring fictional accounts motivate us to obey the Lord, and I especially love the incorporation of scripture passages to reinforce the message of each story.

My children love these stories. The authors illustrate well the biblical principles in the scriptures highlighted. These are great to read at bedtime. The only disappointment is when the book ends.
