Zondervan The TNIV Reference Bible--bonded leather, black

The complete text of the TNIV—the most readable and scholarly accurate translation available today—in an attractive single-column setting with a full set of cross references. Also includes other convenient study features.

Perfect for pastors and teachers who have adopted the TNIV translation—it’s just what they requested in a reference Bible: single column, full references, black-letter edition.

The TNIV Reference Bible is the perfect TNIV for a more in-depth study of God’s Word. The TNIV is the newest translation of God’s Word with the most up-to-date scholarship available today, and is now available in this larger-format, single-column setting.

Because it is easy to read (no study notes or visuals to clutter the page), it is perfect for use anywhere from the college campus to the church auditorium to the airplane seat.

This is the first reference Bible available in the TNIV. The full set of cross references aid in studying the biblical text from Genesis to Revelation, and a helpful set of bottom-of-the-page topical ties creates a topically oriented study path to expand this Bible’s flexibility. A helpful concordance is also included—a must in any reference Bible. This black-letter edition of the TNIV is the best, most comprehensive reference Bible available today.

The TNIV, a newcomer to the market and merits often overlooked, has proven to be the best over-all translation I have yet found in English. I bought this copy for my wife in particular, and I am INCREDIBLY surprised at the heavily reduced price for the value it offers.

I love the single column format. Our family probably have every translation there is , but the TNIV is my favorite.

This is a beautiful Bible. The black bonded leather looks and feels good and the paper is high quality. The format is single column, which I particularly like. The font is pleasant and plenty large enough.
The TNIV is a very good translation. There are minor differences between it and the NIV but the TNIV is basically a gender-neutral version of the NIV.
For an example of the subtle differences, here is Genesis 1:27 in the NIV: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” The TNIV has it: “So God created human beings in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
The only negative comment is that this Bible comes in a cardboard slipcase instead of a 2-piece box. The bottom line: excellent Bible at a reasonable price.

In this review I will endeavor to compare and contrast two rather similar bibles, which I own, published by Zondervan. They are: the TNIV Reference Bible and the NIV 2011 Thinline Reference Bible (large print). While they are quite similar in some ways, they also exhibit marked differences. I will begin with similarities and then give 6 key points in which they differ.
The Similarities:
Both bibles are nearly the same size, with the TNIV being slightly wider and thicker. This is somewhat surprising since the NIV 2011 is some 70 pages longer. More on this in the contrasts. Both are bound in black bonded leather. But here too there is a difference. Both have a ribbon marker and silver gilted edges. Both have columnar cross references, a concordance, a table of weights and measures, 8 pages of color maps and a word to the readers from the translation committee. So much for the similarities.
The Differences:
Binding: Although they both have bonded leather, the TNIV feels more supple and is more flexible than the NIV 2011 which has a distinct plastic-like feel about it. Perhaps it will soften up with use. The bonded leather binding does not allow either bible to lie flat from cover to cover. But herein is a significant difference. The TNIV will lie perfectly flat from about Gen 40 to the end of Rev. The NIV 2011 will only lie perfectly flat from Deut 1 to the end of Heb. Perhaps this will improve with time and handling too.
Page Thickness: The TNIV has real thin pages. The NIV 2011 has real, REAL thin pages. This means that they crease easily. In the case of the NIV 2011, they crease real, REAL... Well you get the point. Thinness of page also accounts for why the NIV 2011 can be 70 pages longer and yet slimmer than the TNIV. BUT, despite the thin pages, bleed-through isn't any problem, at least not so far as I can see. Your mileage may differ.
Print Size: The TNIV is said to be 9 point for the main text. Footnotes and cross references are smaller, of course. This is too small for me in my sixth decade of life. The NIV 2011 text size is supposedly 10.5 point. Ah, much better! This is one of the two reasons I decided to buy the NIV 2011, the other being the new translation.
Page Format: The TNIV is single-column, while the NIV 2011 is double-column. This is no big deal for me, though I do tend to get lost more often in a single column of smaller print. There is some room to write brief notes and references in the margins of both bibles, though the single-column format is better suited for that purpose. I wish they put the column of references in the spinal margin rather than in the outer margin of the TNIV.
Miscellaneous: The TNIV has a brief dictionary of terms, the NIV 2011 does not. The NIV 2011 has very brief book introductions, the TNIV does not. The TNIV has one very valuable feature, IMO, that the NIV 2011 does not have: Topical Ties. At the bottom of most pages there are anywhere from a couple to more than a dozen Topical Ties. A Topical Tie is a verse reference from the page that you're on plus a topic spelled out in a short phrase plus usually 3 reference links: the head link which Begins that topic in the bible, the link that comes immediately before the link on the current page and the link that comes immediately after. A typical tie looks like this from Acts -- 4:34-37 Sharing with the needy. B Lev 19:9-10. Ac 2:44-45 <===> Ro 12:13. The other topics on that page are: Fellowship in the church; Hypocrites in the Bible; References to the unforgivable sin; Healing in the New Testament church; Numerical growth of the kingdom and church; Demon possession in the New Testament. It's very similar to the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. And now for...
The BIG DISAPPOINTMENT, Cross References: The main reason I bought both these bibles was for the cross refs. I got what I wanted and paid for in the TNIV. But the the NIV 2011 disappointed me. The TNIV has exactly the same cross referencing system and cross references as the (T)NIV Study Bible. That's more than 100,000 cross references! The NIV 2011 has far fewer, maybe half that many or less by my estimation. "Well," you might say, "the NIV 2011 has larger print. So naturally they had to cut something out." No! There's the irony. Virtually every column of cross references on every page of that bible is one third to one half blank! They had the room and didn't use it. Why? Furthermore, if both bibles had left out the 70 to 100 pages of useless concordances, there would have been not only enough room for 100,000 cross references but also enough room for 10.5 point type as well.
My Recommendation:
If your eyes are good, get the TNIV. It's the higher quality bible physically. You have a full set of cross references plus the Topical Ties. 92% of its verses are exactly the same as the NIV 2011 (but oh that 8%!). The TNIV has now been discounted to the lowest price I've ever seen it. You had better act fast, though. They won't be around for long. If your eyes aren't good, get the NIV 2011 in large (or giant) print and bring it to church, to work, to bible studies and on vacation. But when you sit down at home to study, make sure that Nelson's Cross Reference Guide to the Bible by Jerome Smith is at hand because you won't find all the references you need in your bible.

I have used The New Int'l Version for decades and have found that the clarity of thought and flow to be exceptional. I am one who uses several translations to make sure I fully understand and am not getting a biased point of view.
I am also an older individual though, and find the type to be extremely small, so for those with vision issues, you may want to opt for the large print version.

I bought this bible as a birthday gift for a college student. It is a good step up from a student bible with more in depth resources, such as the reference columns next to the text. Would reccomend it to others.

I bought this bible for the excellent and accurate translation that the TNIV really is! I'm not a big fan of the single column format and I would prefer the words of Christ in red, but it will be a good addition to my library.

This Bible is presented in a great layout. I wish they would do the exact same for the NIV. Single Column and references. Just one thing...refs could be in the inside of the page to allow for note taking. All in all, great value. I've had mine for over a year, and the bonded has held up fine.

This is an excellent, very usable addition to my library. It is easy to read, has very helpful references, and is compact enough to carry with ease. I had already been referring to the TNIV on the Internet and have begun to use it quite a bit of the time since it is so readable and accurate in most instances. I especially like the translation of Philippians 2:5-11. Verse 6 has finally shown the essence of Paul's intent. I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to others.

For the price,it's very hard to beat. Wish the print was a little larger.I use the TNIV large print, slim line as my regular bible. I've been using the TNIV for over a year. It's my favorite, although I also like the NLT 2004 edition very much. They complement each other nicely.

I love this Bible. I have one in the bonded leather and yes it is stiff, and is not the best leather, but what is inside makes up for it. I love the single column, and the black letter print. I like how they did the reference part but wished they had put it more inside of the pages instead of outside the text. But overall I love this Bible and use it to preach from all the time. I also got the Renaissance Leather as a gift. Since Zondervan is no longer going to make the TNIV and going to do away with it by 2011, I will not mark in my Renaissance and only mark in the bonded. Oh and the paper is high quality and not too thin.

I am beginning to trust this translation more and more in my studies. I am a huge fan of single column paragraph style. This Bible is easy to read and I am hoping the stiffness of the cover will soften up with use. My biggest dislike about this Bible is the book names and chapter numbers at the top of each page are in the center of the page. Thus when looking quickly for Romans 8, you can not flip through as easily as you could if the book names were near the outer edge of the page.

Insides are great, cover is junk. It may as well be a hardback. It does not stay open near the beginning or the end. The Renaissance Leather edition is a better option.

Very good value for the price. The text is easy to red - print not too small. The size is very convenient to carry. It's actually only 1 and 1/4 inch thick - and not very heavy. I especially like the bold print subject headings in the text which make it very easy to find your way around in the text if you're trying to locate a passage. I use a yellow (non-fluorescent) highlighter to mark significant verses, and there is no bleed-through. The layout on each page leaves a lot of extra space to add my own notes and cross references. The only thing I would prefer would be for it to be a red letter edition, but that doesn't significantly diminish my overall appreciation for this Bible.

Pros - TNIV (great translation in my opinion), single column text, great references, really like the 'topical ties' at the bottom of the page - sort of like Thompson Chains, good clear font (seems a bit small for this size Bible)Cons - the cover is very stiff and has a plastic feel to it (a shame for such a great layout inside), and I would prefer the references to be on the 'binding' side of the text, so as to move the text out from the center crease more, paragraph headings are somewhat distracting (very dark bold print - much darker and larger than the text itself)Overall - a great addition to the TNIV family! One of my favorite Bibles (out of the two dozen or so I have)
