Review 1 for The Relevant Church: A New Vision for Communities of Faith
“The Relevant Church” is a collection of essays written by 15 various Christians who are in different church-planting contexts and similar endeavors. All of the authors are trying to speak in relevant ways to our current culture (after all, the book was put out by Relevant and that’s one of their big focuses). There were many voices from all over the country, as well as one from England. Some had started up new projects/churches, others were taking the reigns from established ventures.
Mark Driscoll was by far the most well-known of these authors, but I was familiar with a few of the other churches and movements as well. There were numerous folks I was unaware of and I was impressed by all of the voices – each has a passion for Christ and seeing his name glorified in a variety of contexts, some of which include skate, hip-hop, art, heavily unchurched and inner-city cultures. While the established Church has much going for it, these men and women realize that traditional settings don’t work for many sub-cultures and younger people and thus are seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance for being salt and light in new ways. It’s a good read and I look forward to seeing and hearing more about where some of these churches and individuals are at now.
