I received from Rose Publishing the following Powerpoint to review: How We Got the Bible
I am the Chair of the Biblical Studies department at my college and teach various courses in Biblical Studies. I have used this powerpoint throughout this past school year and have found it very well done and helpful for the classroom.
The powerpoint includes 179 slides. The slides are clearly labeled and well laid out. The slides begin with background information regarding the Bible’s composition. The history of the English Bible in various time periods is then examined (approximately 50 slides). The time periods are broken down into the following eras: 1500 BC - AD 500 section; 500 - 1500; 1500 - 1900; 1900 - 2003. The powerpoint then includes approximately 30 slides illustrating the use of ancient manuscripts (Dead Sea Scrolls, early codexes, etc.) in modern English translations. It follows with approximately 25 slides depicting various English translations of John 1:1. There are eight slides which illustrate the advance of Bible translation between AD 200 and AD 2000. The powerpoint then summarizes the powerpoint by listing “Ten Key points.” Also included are 9 additional slides which discuss the Gospel of Judas.
This is a good collection of slides which would be useful in the classroom setting, for Sunday school, or even to supplement the Sunday morning sermon. The slides are not locked so the information can be tweaked to fit the particular situation. In addition to the slides, there are notes available in .pdf format. These notes are broken down into 6 sections: How We Got the Bible Overview, Ten Key Points, Four Important people, Teaching Tips (including ideas for children); Origin and Growth of the Bible (chart); Bible Translation.
This powerpoint is a good bargin for the price. Its strength lies in presenting a history of the Bible in English. I recommend it to all who desire to help their students/congregation better understand how we received the English Bible we have today.

If you like to use PowerPoint in your teaching (I do) this is fairly complete. However, know in advance, it doesn't replace the necessary research. It mostly sets up the PP slides for you. It does save a lot of time; but to use it effectively, you will still need to do the research.

Here we have a monumental amount of information regarding the background to the Bible. It is a valuable resource for anyone who has to make a presentation on the topic or elements of it. Money well spent.
