This novel has an intriguing, original plot and wonderfully deep characterization of the main character. I stayed up late for two nights in a row reading it.
Yet, overall, I didn't think it nearly as strong as the first book in the series, Cuts Like a Knife, which I absolutely loved. For one thing, you have to get 1/3 through the book for the suspenseful elements to emerge at all. For another, I was left with a lot of unanswered questions about the murder and the culprit's motivation. There were also quite a few typos, the author misused gun terminology twice, and he also made the mistake of having the main character wear a size 2 and fit into a size 0 - which, given her specified height in the book, would render her anorexic. These mistakes are all distracting from the story.
However, there are two elements that I thought were improved from the first novel. First, there's a bit more romance, and second, she wrestles with faith issues a bit more. These both make her a more 3-D, relatable character.

Kristen Conner is one of the youngest detectives on the Chicago police force, and just recently returned to duty after recuperating from injuries sustained while taking down a serial killer. When a high profile murder occurs the same day she returns to the force, she steps up to the plate. Even when her duty includes her going undercover as a high priced cake girl, Kristen works the murder investigation.
This is the second M.K. Gilroy/ Kristen Conner novel that I have read and enjoyed. Kristen is a complicated character, who second guesses her actions on the job and with her family, but not enough to change her ways. In this novel, she picks up a long distance FBI love interest that broadens the storyline. Kristen and her family are Christians, and they live their faith, though Kristen stumbles enough that she definitely feels human, and her efforts to grow are enjoyable. The murder mystery keeps you guessing until almost the very end, with great descriptions of fight scenes that keep the action hopping. I stayed so involved that I lost a little sleep when I did not read the end during my normal hours. I recommend this to readers who enjoy clean detective mysteries with lots of secondary storylines that add interest.

Detective Kristen Conner is back in Gilroy's second novel. A young man from a wealthy Chicago family has been murdered. Suspects include women from an online “companion” service the dead man and his friends used. Kristen is asked to go undercover to find out more about the women providing the service and the group of men who hire them.
I like police detecting novels and this is a good one. Gilroy has done a great job in creating and developing the character of Kristen. She has relationship issues. She is “dating” and FBI agent but the relationship is often rocky. Kristen is a tomboy, coaching her niece's soccer team. How ironic that Kristen is asked to go undercover as a companion with a dating service! Make up? Jewelry? High heels?
Kristen's family is an essential part of the novel. One sister is a well known TV news anchor in Chicago. Another is ready to give birth. Kristen's brother-in-law is a pastor. Kristen interacts with her family in a heartwarming yet realistic way.
Kristen has learned to hold her own in a man's world. She keeps herself in great shape, frequently exercising by boxing or practicing other combat sports. Her combat abilities are a necessary part of the exciting final scenes.
This novel has a good combination of relationship issues and intense action. I am usually critical of a male author writing about a female heroine. But Gilroy has done a good job of creating a believable female Chicago police detective.
One loose end is her stalker. What he can do (the equipment he can get) just doesn't seem to add up yet. Perhaps that will come together in the next in the series.
While this is the second novel about Detective Conner, it can easily be read on its own.
