Penguin Putnam Inc. King's Cross: The Story of the World in the Life of Jesus

New York Times bestselling author and nationally renowned minister Timothy Keller unlocks new insights into the life of Jesus Christ.

King's Cross is Timothy Keller's revelatory look at the life of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark. There have been many biographies of Jesus, but few will be as anticipated as this one by Keller, the man Newsweek calls "a C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century." We might also add, that like Lewis, Keller has effectively--more than anyone else--translated the core message of the Gospel in the language and idioms of the historical context in which he lives.

In this book, Keller shows how the story of Jesus is at once cosmic, historical, and personal, calling each of us to look anew at our relationship with God. Like Keller's other books it has tremendous crossover appeal, but it is also ideal for the faithful, those who are looking for a closer connection to Jesus and Christianity.

He introduces his subject by speaking of The Dance. Each person of the Trinity glorifies the other. He quotes C.S. Lewis,"In Christianity, God is not a static thing...but a dynamic, pulsating activity, a life, almost a drama...a kind of dance." The Trinity is characterized in their essence by mutually self-giving love. God invites us into the dance by glorifying Him, centering our entire life in Him, and finding beauty in Him. Keller later speaks of the Lord's dying words from the cross, "My God, why have you forsaken me?" For our sake, Jesus was temporaily being cut out of the dance.
Keller makes the interesting comment that pupils chose Rabbis; rabbis did not choose pupils. Yet the Lord called people to follow Him and in essence was saying,"Knowing me, loving me, resembling me, and serving me must become the supreme passion of your life. Everything else becomes second-such as family and friends."
He also speaks of the flaming sword in Gen. 3:24 and that Jesus went under the sword;the veil was parted;the way back into the garden (fellowship with God) was permanently reopened.
Keller lso observes that at the last passover meal with Jesus, there is no mention of a lamb because the Lamb of God was at the table.
This study brings to light new insights into the ministry of Jesus from the book of Mark which challenged and enriched my life.

This is an extended meditation on "the premise that Jesus' life, death and resurrection form the central event of cosmic and human history as well as the central organizing principle of our lives." (x) The world and how we fit into it is clearly understood by looking at the story of Jesus.
Keller follows through the gospel of Mark in a very readable commentary. He uses examples from literature and life today to illustrate the truths Mark records.
Keller gives many insights into the life of Jesus and what they mean for us. For example:
From Mark 9:19-29 Keller reminds us that, like the boy's father, we do not have to have perfect righteousness or total belief. "You must admit that you are not righteous, and that you need help. When you can say that, you are approaching God to worship." (121)
"The gospel is the ultimate story that shows victory coming out of defeat, strength coming out of weakness, life coming out of death, rescue from abandonment." (230) Keller encourages us that we can have the same story by accepting what Jesus has done for us.
This book is for anyone desiring insights into Jesus' life and what it means to us today. Keller does not, in general, delve into the Greek. This is not for the scholar. This is for the person desiring to meditate on the events in the life of Jesus.

I very much liked this book. Keller has a certain way of exploring Biblical events and issues. In King's Cross, Keller investigates Jesus as King in the context of the Trinity and also as the savior of the world on the Cross, perhaps, even to the breaking of the Trinity for 3 hours on a Friday afternoon.
The love of God for all of his creation is the overall theme that Keller expresses perhaps better than any other Christian author writing today. You have to say WOW.

King's Cross by Timothy Keller is a study of the life of Jesus and his message through the Gospel of Mark. Keller who is the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan has written several other books about Christianity, but this is a compilation of his sermons on Mark. Mark is considered to be the oldest of the Gospels and is also the shortest. Mark keeps his Gospel short but sweet focusing on the true message of Christ. Keller's wisdom is evident on every page with a great deal of insight for readers. He encourages readers to know Jesus and accept Him as their Savior. "[Jesus] is both the rest and the storm, both the victim and the wielder of the flaming sword, and you must accept him or reject him on the basis of both. Either you'll have to kill him or you'll have to crown him," pg. 162. Keller's writing is straight-forward, much like Mark's, and filled with knowledge. Both readers new to Mark and those who have read the Gospel many times will find much to consider. "When [Jesus] comes back, everything sad will come untrue," pg. 17. His insight into marriage makes me want him to write a marriage guide that gives understanding to this statement: "If two people love each other more than they love God, their minor fight will become major fights, and major fights will become world-shaking cataclysms, because neither can take the other's displeasure or the other's failure. They become isolated from each other and eventually their relationship begins to disintegrate." pg 204. Keller tells readers that the basis of failure or success in every relationship of their life begins with their relationship with Jesus, and that He is their only hope of a satisfying life on earth with the promise of eternal life after. I read a lot of books like this, and Keller's stands out because it is both intelligent and easy to understand. This is a must read for those early in their walk with the Lord and those looking to strengthen their faith.

Tim Keller does another wonderful job of communicating the truths of God in this devotional commentary on Mark. This is not an in depth, verse by verse exposition. Instead it takes each chapter of Mark and develops the themes that Mark was trying to convey about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
It is Keller's view, as well as most scholars, that Mark is merely the scribe for the Apostle Peter in the retelling of this the ministry of Christ. Thus you find the stories come with an eyewitness feel even though John Mark was not an eyewitness of the events. It is also believed that Mark was written for the Christians of the persecuted church in Rome, thus more for a Gentile audience than a Jewish audience. Further, Mark is the first of the Gospels that was written, but also the shortest. Mark doesn't spend time developing major story lines as much as just reporting what happened.
I have been amazed at how often Mark says, "immediately" to express how something happened. There is an urgent feel to the work and Keller does a good job of picking up on that.
Keller is a great communicator of the truth of God's word. While we would often say he brings new light to this material I would prefer to say that he gives us the ability to connect in new understanding to this material. There is nothing new here, just the newness of a great communicator who has wrestled with the text and given us an explanation that is rich yet easy to understand.
Read through the Gospel of Mark in one sitting, it shouldn't take you overly long even if you are a slow reader. Then go back and start in on Keller's book and you will be refreshed by the insights that you gain and the understanding you pick up about the different stories that are related.
I very much appreciate how Keller handles the story of the rich young ruler. He does not tell us that wealth is wrong, what he tells us is that our priorities of how we live our lives is what makes the difference. Jesus came to serve. He asks us to serve. To do that effectively we have to not be putting our trust in our wealth or our material belongings, instead we have to be committed to giving all that up if necessary to be able to love others the way that Christ loved us and calls us to love others.
Christ had all the wealth possible. He is God, He dwelled in the heavenly places, He had everything under his control. But he willingly gave all that up so that He could come and love us enough to die on a cross for us to present us to Himself as a bride without blemish. Christ understand fully what he was asking the rich young ruler to do, because He had done it.
That is just one short part of this wonderful book. You won't be disappointed with how Keller communicates and how he develops the theme that this King, Jesus came for a Cross not a throne.
Enjoy!
