Ty Buchanan is probably the most unique, laid back and eccentric guy to have anything to do with the law field. It wasn't written with false perceptions or trying to butter things up to make everyone happy. Bell tells Ty's story how it really is and shows all the darkness that's in the world. Also even though this is the second book in the series and the reader could benefit from reading the first book in the series, I feel that it could be read as a standalone. The mystery stands out and is quite powerful. I'm pretty much a sucker for little kids in stories that need help and I'm glad Ty was too.As in the first book, I felt the storyline to be gritty and written in a film noir-ish way. California, which is normally seen as glitzy and glamorous in other books, takes on a darker, more underground, less colorful atmosphere. What I like best about Ty is that he's quite cynical and a bit sarcastic. He's not the charming fellow women fall in love with yet he has a way with people that gets them to trust him. He's unconventional, witty and questions a lot of things which I really liked because he doesn't act like he knows everything.I really enjoyed reading about Ty's adventures again. I love his chemistry with both Sister Mary and Father Bob who are two of the most unlikely accomplices a detective could have. They add both insight and humor to Ty's personality. I really enjoyed how this book is able to be gritty and edgy without resorting to using sex or rough language. This is by no means saying the book is clean and safe. It chooses to show the world as it really is and not through rose colored glasses but it does it by not being coarse or preachy at the same time. It's a balance that works really well and I think pays off. I've enjoyed all of James Scott Bell's books in the past and this is another one to add to the list. This is another book to give to male readers as it is the type of book that I believe a lot of guys would enjoy.

James Scott Bell has become one of my favorite authors. I have read all of his books and each one is better than the last. I was born and raised in LA and now live in Florida. The story lines take me back to places I remember in LA. I look forward to the next Ty Buchanan novel.

As with all of James Scott Bell's books, this is another page turner. You get hooked to it from the first few chapters. I had to finish reading it last night as I couldn't put his book down. Not only is Mr. Bell a very nice person, who keeps you updated with his newletter, his writing is excellent. I have read every book he has written and not only recommend Try Darkness but all his other books. His style, interest and stories are excellent. I thought it interesting a lady who writes excellent Christian Fiction books has attended some of his seminars, which I thought was the ultimate compliment a highly sucessful author attending a class by Mr. Bell. Without question I recommend this book.

If you have read Try Dying, reward yourself with this great sequel! If you haven't read Try Dying, add both these books to your TBR pile. The suspense, the hints of romance, and the one liners from Ty Buchanan's thoughts make for a terrific read. Mr. Bell knows LA and he does a wonderful job bringing it to life for the rest of us. Eagerly anticipating the third installment!

The pages practically turned themselves as I readas I've come to expect from a James Scott Bell book. I love the unique layout of the chapters, all 191 of them! But not to worry, they're not long. Some are only a paragraph, some may appear two to a page, sometimes more. It's fun, and kept me turning the pages. AND, there's no place to find an easy break where you feel ready to set the book aside. Can't be done. I read Try Darkness in less than two days, waking up in the night to my husband removing glasses, setting the book aside and turning out the light.Do I recommend this book? Oh, yeah!

James Scott Bell's second book in the Ty Buchanan series is a great read. His style and the quality of his writing rival that of Raymond Chandler and Robert B. Parker. The plot is excellent and will keep you guessing. The cast of characters is memorable. And Buchanan himself is just flawed enough for each of us to identify with him and root for him on his journey. I hated to put this one down, and can hardly wait for the next Ty Buchanan novel.
