Faith Words Why Jesus? Rediscovering His Truth in an Age of Mass Marketed Spirituality

We see it everywhere. From musicians and movie stars, to neighbors and friends at work, people are interested in having a spiritual life, but treat faith more like an à la carte menu at a restaurant, choosing what they like and dismissing the rest. Epitomized by popular figures like Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra, Western culture has embraced a spirituality devoid of the Biblical Christ.

In Why Jesus? Rediscovering His Truth in an Age of Mass Market Spirituality, Ravi Zacharias explores how this "New Spirituality" emerged. Looking at popular culture and contemporary writers and philosophers in this dialogue, Ravi evaluates their claims through the lens of four key elements--Truth, Relevance, Faith, and Reason, to show how relativism cannot answer the spiritual hunger in our hearts.

Rediscover the uniqueness of Jesus Christ and how His resurrection is the most important argument for the exclusive claims of Christianity.

A great eye opener. The book shows how easy it is to get caught up in modern philosophy. Some parts of the book may offend you - it did me. I needed to take a good look at myself and my spiritual journey -- get back on track with Jesus. A book that I recommend reading - more than once. Get the details, and spend more time in the scriptures and prayer.

This book is not too long and not too simplistic to appeal to both Christians and non-Christians.

Ravi is one of my favorite Christian thinkers/speakers/writers and he offers up excellent food for thought in his latest book which focuses on the media's distortion of Christianity and the emptiness of New Age Spirituality. His knowledge of Hinduism and other Eastern religions make him an authority on the subject and in the end he helps point us back to Jesus. The real Jesus, the Jesus of the Gospels. The only one with the answers. The Truth.

I checked "Yes" to the recommend question, even though I sincerely believe that the average reader would have a tough time with something written at this level. Not being familiar with eastern religions, I had to force myself through the book, constantly running to the computer with little stickies full of words I didn't understand. With that said, Ravi Zacharias does an excellent job of defining just how subversive the world around us has become, and in the process has increased my vocabulary. He explains how the word of God has been marginalized by the media. And by media, I mean all who have a message whether it be print, TV, seminars or pseudo-churches. Hopefully, the message will enlighten and bring to Christ those evolved in New Age "ME" philosophy. All we need to do is get them to read and understand the book.

This book was very readable and interesting. As a culture, we have way too much information swirling around us, which leads us to accept without question what is being promoted. This book causes us to stop, look and really see how we are being lead down popular roads and away from God's Truth.

The book is titled: Why Jesus? It would have been entitled: Why it's not Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra. In fact, three quarters of this book is devoted to denouncing the mass marketed new spirituality. Only few chapters are devoted to answering the question: Why Jesus? I wish that the proportions would be reversed. It is correct to denounce the rhetoric of the new gurus, but this should not occupy the entire speech.

With wisdom and fearless exploration, my favorite author Ravi in his unique style meticulously summarizes what really is happening to Western Culture and the Christian beliefs upon which America was founded. No better apologist has surfaced. (With the exception of the speakers and evangelists on his team and in training.) He is contemporary yet theologically, philosophically & historically well-seated. Bravely he confronts the erroneous and dangerous spirituality theories of highly visible and influential Oprah and Chopra. He utilizes such relevance and specificity, declaring the ultimate truth of creation, and man's diverse and complicated reaction to the unmet needs of life. Dr. Zacharias preserves the integrity of the Bible and inspires seeking God the Father's truth about who He is, and Why He created us in His image, and why the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ was and is necessary. God sits upon His throne, and in my heart, and I am not my own god. May this piece reach millions with truth about the danger and fallacy of new age spirituality. Ravi sets matters in order for every skeptic, agnostic, atheist and misled soul on the planet as he brilliantly proclaims the truth of Jesus Christ and confronts the ignorance of new age thinking! Pray for the 'enemies' of the faith that they may emerge from the dark new age and become brothers and sisters in Christ too. Thank you Dr. Zacharias, may God protect you.

Ravi, in his usual academic style takes apart the post modern philosophies of the new age gurus (from Oprah to Chopra). An excellent expose of how bankrupt the new age movement is.

The Lord created human beings with an innate spiritual hunger. Our search for satisfaction and fulfillment takes us in all sorts of directions, as evidenced by the way "Jesus" is defined and depicted through the smorgasbord of spiritual experiences that attract millions of followers. In essence, the world has created a "Jesus" (actually many "Jesuses") in its own image. Although the name may be revered, it is little more than a "dumbed down" version of the God who stepped into history to redeem sinful man. Ravi Zacharias is one of the great Christian minds of our day. "Why Jesus?" is a well-reasoned and clearly-stated Christian apologetic that takes aim at the "New Age/New Spirituality" of this postmodern era. The author is not afraid to name names, exposing the fallacies of such self-proclaimed gurus as Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle, and cautioning readers to be wary of the "spiritual testimonies" of media darlings like Oprah Winfrey. Zacharias' arguments are based on a strong biblical hermeneutic, as he implores us to return to the time-tested Scriptures. His eastern background gives credibility to his insistence that much of the "new spirituality" that has taken hold in the West has its origin in eastern thought, especially Hinduism. Therefore, it is not "new" at all, but is as old as the serpent's deception of Eve in the Garden of Eden. Some readers may tend to get lost in the middle of the book where the author traces the development of eastern religious thought. One is urged to remain with it, however, because in the end he exposes the emptiness of striving to find the "god" within each of us, and makes an appeal to trust the Lord Jesus Christ (and Him alone) instead. The book is well written and not a difficult read. It would be worth passing a copy along to college or graduate students who are struggling with matters of faith and/or the firming up of their own world views.

We all have deep spiritual hunger. We long to escape the world around us and have peace within. We are offered a spiritual smorgasbord. Ravi reviews the most popular forms of the New Spirituality and their marketing techniques. He reveals their underlying worldviews. He then looks at the message of Jesus, the one and only hope for mankind.
He notes that New Age Spirituality has displaced inductive reasoning with personalized mystical revelation as the basis for truth. (30) He reviews the impact of Oprah and Chopra, including their spiritual journeys and their success. He reveals the eastern roots of the “new” Western Spirituality, identifying the Hindu and Buddhist links, and describes the designers of the east to west movement. He addresses the “...bizarre twists of truth offered by proponents of the New Spirituality.” (230)
He explains how the west lost its way and stumbled into the New Spirituality. He reveals the decline of the Word, the Son, and Truth. He also shows how many have reshaped Jesus to suit our prejudices.
The is a great book for people wanting to understand the successful offerings of spirituality by people like Oprah and Chopra. Ravi was born in India and from that background is able to clearly explain the eastern basis for their spirituality. He also includes evaluations of authors like Eckhart Tolle, Neale Donald Walsch, and Elizabeth Lesser.
This book would be helpful in approaching those who have been leaning toward any of the New Spirituality gurus.
Ravi's conclusion is that spirituality is not enough. We need Jesus.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. The opinions expressed are my own.
