Customer Reviews for Moody Publishers Wycliffe Bible Commentary

Moody Publishers Wycliffe Bible Commentary

Scholars from across the conservative spectrum in American Protestant Christianity have combined to produce a valuable one-volume commentary on the entire Bible. The Wycliffe Bible Commentary brings together scholars from 15 different denominations and 25 schools of Christian higher education, and focuses on determining the meaning of the text. It is neither a devotional commentary nor a technical exegesis, but is an insightful help for serious Bible students looking to understand the text. Introductory information such as authorship, dating and an outline of the text is included for every book of the Bible, as is a bibliography for each book. Thus, The Wycliffe Bible Commentary proves itself a valuable resource for any serious Bible student.

Overview of The Wycliffe Bible Commentary:
  • Theologically conservative (Evangelical)
  • Semi-technical (Greek and Hebrew words are transliterated when they appear)
  • A phrase-by-phrase commentary based on the King James Version (KJV)
  • geared for Bible students and pastors

With this purchase, I was looking for a single-volume, quick-access commentary for those times when I wanted my nose to be stuck in the Bible and not sorting through "heavier" commentaries. This book is more than suited to the purpose. It's a wonderful study aid that I find helpful for routine reading of the Bible -- and one that doesn't interrupt the flow of my Bible reading. Highly recommended!

I have had a copy of The Wycliffe Bible Commentary for years. I use it when I a question about a passage of scripture. I like it because it presents several points of view instead of some books which gives the attitude, "this is the way I believe, so why present a diffent view point?" As Christian we should not be threatened by other views and knowing other views helps Christian to better defend the truth. It has been very helpful.

Personally, I have found Wycliffe's commentary very helpful from the first day I unwrapped it. When needing help understanding scripture, or to examine more closely a scripture - Wycliff's Commentary is precise, accurate, and informative. It has a prominent place place on my desk now - Along with the Bible, of course! It was interesting to note that on Chuck Swindoll's website in FAQ Chuck listed among his top favorites and books that have inspired him, Everett Harrison and Charles Pfeiffer's Wycliffe Bible Commentary, along with John Bunyan's Pigrim's Progress, and the works of C.S. Lewis.

This was one of the first commentaries we purchased. We have used it a great deal throughout the years, and we continue to use it frequently. Detail varies from book to book. The theological viewpoint is generally premillennial. I recommend it for those who are just getting started with Bible study, or for those who want commentaries on the whole Bible but who don't have the budget to purchase individual commentaries or a large multi-volume set. This one-volume commentary, together with The Bible Knowledge Commentary (also available from Christianbook.com), gives one a good "starter set" of commentaries.
