Wordsmiths Jensen's Vocabulary

Teach your students English from the roots up with this systematic, easy-to-follow program. As they learn over 1,000 words containing a Latin or Greek base, prefix, or suffix, they'll discover how to spell a word from "the sum of its parts"; think logically about words and definitions; increase their ability to read for comprehension; and improve standardized test scores. A list of roots and their definitions are included at the beginning of the book; lessons ask students to make educated guesses about unfamiliar English words, find the root in a word, and work from the root definition to the current word and more, basing all answers upon the roots included in the word. Includes answer key. Ages 12 and up. 264 pages, softcover.

The concept of this book is good, although my son struggles a bit with it. English is one of his strongest subjects, yet he is frustrated with this book a little. There is really no explanation as to why certain roots belong with certain words, and it's difficult to explain. I know more of the things but not because it makes sense. Only because that's what I memorized as a child. I wish there was a teacher guide to thoroughly walk the kids through the process with understanding!

We'll be starting to use this text in a few days for the start of our school year. After reading all the notes to the teacher and student at the beginning of the book and looking thoroughly throughout the book, I can tell that the student will definitely develop in their vocabulary. Students are taught how to recognize common roots and affixes which help them discover meanings of words not previously studied. Once the student becomes familiar with how the program works, it's obvious that most students will be able to work independently with the teacher grading the student work which will simply be a matter of seeing if the student put the correct letter or word in the blank. (Some families would probably be ok with the student grading their own work and then the parent only grading at quiz times.) ------ THE BASIC LAYOUT OF THE PROGRAM as the textbook describes is that students learn 20 new words each week. Each week is divided into a 4-part lesson labeled in the text as A-D. "A" consists of students using the roots/affixes charts included in the beginning of the textbook to discover meanings of the weekly 20 new words. Dictionary use should only be a last resort as the text advises. Parts B-C are further study on the roots/affixes of the words which helps students to understand the words more. Part D is a page of 20 context sentences with a blank within each sentence for students to write in the newly-learned vocabulary words for the week. On the last day of the week, teachers/parents are encouraged to test the students on mastery of the weekly vocabulary. ------- MY ONE DISAPPOINTMENT with the text is that the quizzes and exams are NOT included in the text as some other website reviews/explanations had indicated. However, the answers for Parts A-D are included in the back of the textbook. There is one sample test with its corresponding answers toward the end of the book that could be used as a guide in constructing further tests. In my opinion, the lack of quizzes and exams is not too much of a setback. I'm now just planning to give oral weekly quizzes and have my student turn in their written responses. ------ With the basic layout described above, the student is expected to cover one lesson per week. There are a total of 54 lessons of vocabulary words in the textbook which means that at one lesson per week this textbook will take 54 weeks or roughly 3 semesters for those who want to count high school credits.

My daughter and I are having a hard time getting the hang of this. When I looked at her answers without looking at the key I thought she had most of them right on the second exercise. It really doesn't make sense to us. I am VERY disappointed in this product, especially when I trusted the review in the catalog and thought I was getting something that was exceptional.

I've only been using it for 2 weeks, but so far so good! I like teaching the roots, and this book gives you a systematic way to do it. There's nothing flashy or fancy about it, but it already seems like my son is catching on. We've done other root programs in the past, and they never really gave you anything to do, but to just "study"the roots, so this one has some challenge to it.

This is a really great resource. It is not an easy course, so if your child has had no experience with Greek and Latin roots, try introducing it with a program for younger students first. Sharp!
