In It's Your Kid, Not a Gerbil, psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman offers insight and solutions for creating a less stressed home life. Parents of children ages 2 - 18 will be helped to give up the impossible quest to make their children "succeed" and instead, create a scenario where their kids are more likely to adopt the values taught at home. I enjoy reading and listening to Kevin Leman. He has a no nonsense approach to parenting, but he is also extremely funny, which I appreciate. When given the opportunity to read and review his book "It's Your Kid Not a Gerbil," I was excited to see what he had to say.
In this book, Leman has a way of taking the pressure off of parents who feel like we will cause damage to our children if we don't have them involved in every activity under the sun. Do you ever feel like you are a gerbil running on the wheel and you just want off? There have been times in my own life where I have said, "Stop the world! I want to get off!" While I want my children to be well-rounded, I don't want to extend our activities to the point of putting undue pressure to perform on my children.
Leman reminds parents that our job is to raise children that will adopt the values they learned at home and become productive members of society. He gives tips and advice on how to create a less stressful environment at home ~ who wouldn't want that?! If you are a parent, you need to read this book!
I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. I admit that I tend to like Keven Leman's books in general. When given the opportunity to read his newest book, It's Your Kid Not A Gerbil, I jumped on it. Kevin Leman takes a no-nonsense approach to parenting. He keeps the goal in mind of raising children who will be successful adults. And by successful, he doesn't mean money-driven job-focused adults; he means adults who love their family and are contributing members of society.
It's Your Kid, Not A Gerbil is a breath of fresh air in a culture where children control their family dynamics rather than the parents doing so. Leman looks at the steps to take in order to have a happier and less-stressed home. I wish I could get this book into the hands of many of the parents around me. But don't read this book if you aren't willing to change things (especially the family schedule) in order to have a happier and less-stressed family.
Tyndale Publishers have provided me with a free copy of this book to review. Their doing so did not bias my review in any way.

Stop whatever you are doing and purchase this book. It will change your world and you will be eternally grateful for Kevin Leman writing it and for me suggesting it. I 99.9% promise. (There is always that one!)
It's Your Kid Not a Gerbil is one of the best books that I have read in a while. I have suggested it to so many people in just the last few days. God used this book in a way that He hasn't used anything in my life for several months. Do yourself a favor. Go get this book. Whether you have one small child or kids in high school, don't wait until Christmas or your next birthday for someone to buy it for you. Get it now. (Can you tell I really, really suggest this book?)
Momma C's Thoughts:
First of all, Kevin Leman is an amazing author. He has written two (now three) of my most suggested books - Have a New Kid By Friday and Sheet Music. There is no beating around the bush in his writing. He isn't afraid to step on toes but just hangs it all out to dry. While reading this book, I have stopped and read portions to my husband because some parts are hilarious. My husband never reads and he is working his way through this book.
Second, this book is eye opening to the facts of life. "Creating a Happier and Less-Stressed Home." Who doesn't want that? The problem is that it is kind of hard to hear what we need to do to gain that. Sometimes while reading, I felt my heart brake with the honesty of the situation. But I was encouraged to see that a happy and less-stressed home is very attainable.
Kevin Leman gives practical ideas to create a place that truly is a home. A place that our children want to return to after they leave the nest. He explains how to discipline with grace. How to mold each child in a way that will cause them to be a light all while having a relationship with you as their parent. I gleaned ideas for my marriage. (He has a special section for single parents as well.) On and on I have points underlined.
We all deeply desire the Walton-family, goodnight-John-boy home. Yet our priorities get out of whack. Pick up this book and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you through Kevin Leman's words. I assure you, it will change your life if you let it. And, you will never look back.

Dr. Kevin Leman hits the nail on the head in this book! I can't give this book enough praise! I feel an urgency to tell every parent I know to read this. We are not that involoved with activities at our house, our children are quite young yet (2yrs & 7yrs). I agree whole heartedly with all that he says, and I am so glad that I found this book when I did. It has changed my view of parenting/activities. I have also read his "Have a New Child By Friday" book; I feel that the two books alone have forever changed how I parent my child, for the better Thank you, Dr. Leman, Thank you!
