Institute for Excellence in Writing How to Write a Story

Based upon the author's successful seminars, How to Write A Story is geared towards younger writers, but may be successfully adapted for older writers. Eight lessons will explain the fundamentals of writing fiction (enjoyably!) while exercises reinforce what has been taught and worksheets help with assess progress. Students are taught a 3-step story model, where there is a situation involving a character with a problem, an objective, and obstacles over which this character seeks to triumph. Exercises help strengthen the imagination, encourage revisions, reinforce elements of writing, and require original writing. 80 pages, softcover and spiral-bound. Answers included.

I have been using this book for my homeschool co-op writing class and have been terribly disappointed. As an editor for several publishers, I've been astounded at the number of errors it's riddled with; it looks like it never got edited, much less proofread. The author repeats himself frequently but doesn't make it clear when he's clarifying one point or bringing up another. The basic premise is excellent; it's just very difficult to teach. I would like to see the author/publisher make it more user-friendly, including giving step-by-step instructions to teacher and student know what they're supposed to do. It has the potential to be a great manual; it just needs to be taken back to the drawing board.

This product has all the workings to produce well rounded home school students that need this type of approach to teach how to write in a simple understandable way for both parent and child. I highly recommend this curriculum.
