This book of writing lessons for the middle and high school student is excellent on two levels. As the student learns and practices the basics, and then more advanced skills of good writing, they also learn about three wonderfully virtuous historic figures: Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, and St. Francis. The thought-provoking source materials provided about these three Christians will interest and challenge the student as he/she learns to effectively and concisely take notes from these source materials to serve as a basis for their own written work. With my eighteen years of teaching high school English to draw upon, I can authoritatively state that this is a valuable book to teach students how to become good, confident writers who keep portfolios of their work, and who analyze and improve their writings as they learn even more advanced techniques. The beauty of this book is that while taking the student through the steps to craft well-written summaries, creative stories from pictures, research reports, essays, reviews, and critiques, the student is also exposed to excellent written/spoken works that Lincoln, Mother Teresa, and St. Francis have either produced themselves or that have been written about them. What a wonderful combination!
