Thomas Nelson Same Kind of Different As Me: A Modern-Day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together

Denver Moore grew up in Louisiana in the 1960's, working on a plantation as a modern-day slave. Ron Hall is an international arts dealer who moves between upscale New York galleries and celebrities. It seems unlikely that these two men would meet under normal circumstances. Until Deborah Hall, Ron's wife meets Denver and sees him through God's eyes of compassion. When Deborah is diagnosed with cancer she charges Ron with the mission of saving Denver. From this request, an extraordinary friendship forms between Denver and Ron, changing them both forever. A remarkable true story of friendship and unconditional love!

This opened my eyes to the way people were treated in the early to mid 1900's. It makes me more aware of the way I treat people today. I really enjoyed this book.

This book quickly captured my attention, and kept me up all night reading to learn more about a man, his Godly wife, and a homeless man that captured their interest (and mine). It is joy born from sorrow. You'll laugh and cry.

Amazing true story! You cannot be unaffected by it. I bought it in hardback to be able to keep in my library. Paperback version has been passed on to many who have passed it on to others. You won't be able to keep yourself from telling people about it - just don't tell them everything! I have a page full of simple, yet powerful quotes written out to call to mind regularly. It is rich with them.Reading follow up book now (get that one, too!)

This is a wonderful, inspiring story that challenges many preconceived notions about different types of people. I think Ron and Denver serve as great role models for any Christian seeking to know more fully what it means to be sisters and brothers of Christ and of one another.

I do rate this 5-star because it is the second copy I own. I gave my first one away because I feel the story should be told and retold. What an awesome story!

This book will engage your emotions in completely unexpected ways. This is the story of two very different men. Denver was brought up in Louisiana, in a kind of slavery that was supposed to have ended a hundred years prior to his birth. Denver left Louisiana by jumping a freight train and ended up in Dallas, homeless and alone. Ron was living the American dream, having steadily moved through a series of jobs until he achieved success as an art dealer. While Ron was in love with the lifestyle his new business offered, his wife Debbie was less enthralled. Ron and Denver were brought together through the efforts of Rons wife. Initially, neither man was excited about the relationship, but it slowly blossomed into an unusual friendship that was to have life altering results for both of them. Take time to read this book. It will give you new insights into the world of the homeless as well as into the lives of those who are still in the grip of economic slavery.

Thomas Nelson offered this book as a bonus. I am so glad they did because I might not have elected to read it and then would have missed something wonderful. This book will engage your emotions in completely unexpected ways. This is the story of two very different men. Denver left Louisiana by jumping a freight train and ended up in Dallas, homeless and alone. Initially, neither man was excited about the relationship, but it slowly blossomed into an unusual friendship that was to have life altering results for both of them. Midway through the book Debbie is diagnosed with cancer and we see the struggle to defeat the disease and the effect of the struggle on both men and on their friendship. The dynamic changes several times as first Ron and then Denver offers support through the ordeal. Take time to read this book. It will give you new insights into the world of the homeless as well as into the lives of those who are still in the grip of economic slavery.

This is a powerful story of God's redemptive love and the move of the Holy Spirit to guide lives through all aspects of life. This true story shines a light on the reality of today in different social classes and how they mesh in their need of relationships with God.

Will connect with you on many levels; compassion for the less fortunate, social justice, racial reconcilliation, cancer, marriage commitment, etc. I am involved in racial reconcillioation issues and I lost my wife to cancer so this book hit me with both barrels. Same Kind of Different As Me (Ron Hall and Denver Moore, with Lynn Vincent) is one of the most moving books Ive read in a long, long time.Who, but God, could have fathered a strong, sustaining friendship between Denver Moore, a man who grew up almost as a slave in the backwoods of Louisiana, and Ron Hall, a wealthy art dealer used to hobnobbing with the rich and powerful? Who, but God, could have foreseen the far-reaching results of that friendship in times of need?Debbie Hall, Rons wife, was a woman of strong faith who felt called to serve in a homeless shelter. She had an ability to relate with love to everyone she met and to look for the best in everyone. Slowly she drew her husband into service at the shelter; slowly she began to thaw the protective shell that Denver had built around his anger and hurt. And gradually the two men began to trust and rely on one another. This story of friendship, redemption, and service is a beautiful portrait of God at work in our lives. Highly recommended!

Truly a book I feel everyone should read. One thing I believe every previous reviewer and I have in common, is that once you begin reading this true story you will not want to put it down. I've recommended it to my family and I am going to recommend to many others as well. Powerful, funny, heartfelt and anointed.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best books I've ever read. I can relate to the feedsack dresses of Denver's family and the college education of Ron, but mostly I relate to the fact that in God's eyes we are all the same. There is no color, status, or name that sets us apart in God's family. In that reality is true riches.

Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore with Lynn Vincent is just too good for a five-star rating. This book is in a class by itself. In fact, I would say its one of the ten best books Ive read in my lifetimeand thats a lot of books! This poignant, gripping, heartrending story of the most unlikely of brothers is beyond amazing, and Vincents writing is superb. From twentieth-century slavery to multi-million-dollar art sales and everything in between, the authors pull no punches when it comes to telling it like it is. This is faith-in-the-trenches, love-in-the-gutters writing, and it will forever change the life of anyone who reads it with an honest, seeking heart.

After purchasing the book I couldn't put it down and read it until 2:30a! I found myself either laughing or crying. It is a story of restoration and God's unfailing love. I wonder how many "Denvers'" God sent my way and I looked the other way. I've limited God's abilities for most of my life. After reading this book I will never be the same.
