Downhill with Saxon

He did wonderfully with Saxon 2, 3, and 5/4. However, we just finished 6/5 and math has totally gone downhill for him using Saxon.
We do it exactly the way it is intended. We do every single problem. We check daily work and lovingly correct mistakes together. When he has gotten below 80 on a test, we backed up to that lesson and re-started.
Unfortunately, the sheer number of problems encourages sloppy work. My son Actually has a great work ethic and attitude but when you have 45 problems every day, would you be likely to rush? More than that, there is just not enough time for things to sink in. He learned multiplying fractions, percents, and dividing fractions in just a few days. No wonder he was confused.

My kids have been using Saxon math products since K and respond well to incremental learning. There is plenty of practice (extra available in the back of the book) and review of previously taught material. Some parents don't like the language used in the lower grades for operations, such as "some, some more", but my kids found this helpful when working out word problems. Like any program used for homeschooling--use what works and change what doesn't.

Although this is my first math book ive ever used for my 10 year old daughter and I have nothing to compare it to I will deffinately be purchasing the next level for her next year. This math book is awesome it has the student do a drill test, mental math and other warmups before they learn a detailed lesson! I love how thorough this book is. My daughter has the ability to self teach with this book. After a lot of research, hints the name. I would recommend this book and will being using it again.

The books (kit) was for me. To help me so that I could under stand the math that my Grandchild is doing. So we have a book at home. The school dose not have enough books to go around. this is the best book I've found.

I'm working with a 17 year old young man who used Saxon to jump from third-grade proficiency in math to eighth grade proficiency in math in less than six months. A good curriculum.

I am using this as a homeschool curriculum, and it is fabulous. I highly recommend the supplemental disk as it actually has a teacher teaching the lessons if you are nervous at all about teaching Math. I have used 4 different curriculums, and this is by far my favorite. I do not think it is probably as strong as Singapore for Math Concepts, but it certainly prepares the kids well, keeps them practicing the things they need to remember and doesn't overwhelm them with busy work.

This math is the best I have found at explaining concepts. It has easy reference for the student to look back to if they need refreshing. It is helpful also for a home school mom who needs assistance teaching. The only negative thing is that it takes a long time to complete a lesson. The book says it should take 40-80 minutes, but typically takes my children the 80 minutes or more to complete. Then they are in need of a break.

I have used Saxon math since I started homeschooling my children. It is the only curriculum I haven't ventured away from to try new things. It's broken down into easy to follow steps and builds material so that the children understand. I prefer a hardback text book just because they are more durable and I can use them again later for the younger children, but you can't beat the price!

Having taught in the public school system for a few years, I found the Saxon Math kit to be a great teaching/learning tool that helps the teacher/student not only instruct/learn on a more advanced level, it provides a continual review of basic math skills that could easily be set aside or forgotten. I appreciate the simplicity of the lessons. Each lesson takes a thorough comprehensive look at the concepts being taught. A student could easily learn on their own with this teaching tool! I will continue to use Saxon Math materials.
